ILWACO, WASH. — Washing-
ton State University’s Master
Gardeners of Pacific County
presents “Propagation of De-
ciduous and Evergreen Shrubs
and Trees from Stem Cuttings,”
10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept.
8, at the Columbia Pacific Heri-
tage Museum on 115 S.E. Lake
St. in Ilwaco.
As fall approaches, now
is the time to start thinking
about plants you would like to
propagate during the fall and
winter in preparation for adding
to your garden in the spring.
Learn more about using stem
cuttings to propagate deciduous
and evergreen shrubs and trees.
At the same time, the Plant
Clinic runs from 10 a.m. to
noon at the museum. Come ask
a Master Gardener about your
plant questions or problems!
Bring samples if you can.

SEAVIEW, WASH. — The
Sou’wester Lodge will host
writing-focused workshops
on the first two Wednesdays
in September.
Create beautiful one-of-a-
kind artifacts to send in the
mail during Melissa Favara’s
class, “Artful Correspon-
dence,” taking place 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Creative letter craft will
involve writing, gathering
ephemera and collaging
with a wealth of materials.
Optional typewriters and all
materials are provided.
Favara writes creative
nonfiction, teaches writ-
ing and literature at Clark
College, collects typewriters
and curates the 1,000 Words
reading series. Her work has
appeared in Street Roots,
McSweeney’s Internet Ten-
dency and elsewhere.
The cost is $30, plus a $5
material fee paid directly to
the instructor.
A maximum of 10 stu-
dents will be admitted.
Then, on Wednesday,
Sept. 12, from 6 to 9 p.m.,
Oregon poet and author Nick
Jaina teaches, “Can You
Learn To Be A Poet?”
Most academic approach-
es to writing poetry stress an
intellectual understanding of
the mechanics and discuss
the great canon of poetry that
already exists.
This approach is import-
ant but incomplete. Jaina be-
lieves that poetry also comes
from having a reverence for
the world. The best way to
do that is not intellectual but
physical, he says.

that entails a short guid-
ed meditation, some light
movement, a meditation walk
and writing exercises. It will
culminate with students read-
ing poetry aloud while Jaina
provides a soundtrack.
Jaina is an author and
musician. His first book,
the memoir “Get It While
You Can,” was a finalist
for the 2016 Oregon Book
Award. He has released
several albums, co-founded a
ballet company and recorded
soundtracks for feature films
and documentaries.
The cost is $40. Bring a
pen and paper (no laptops).
Coffee, tea and water will be
provided.
This workshop is for
students 13 and older; 15
students max.
