Hiking Club hits the Norman Yeon House The dog day of summer The Angora Hiking Club’s next destination, on Wednesday, Sept. 5, is the Norman Yeon House. Hikers will meet that day at 1 p.m. at the River View Platform parking lot between Sixth and Seventh streets on Marine Drive in Astoria. Anyone not wanting to carpool can meet at the Sunset Beach parking lot at 1:30 p.m. A National Park Ranger will meet hikers to lead the walk to the house. Yeon donated the house and 110 acres to the Trust For Public Land. After his death in 2004, it became part of the Lewis and Clark Norman Yeon House. National Park. Prior to his death, he spent more than 40 years in the summers there, restoring native plants, creating a refuge for deer, elk and other wildlife. The trail is an easy walk and offers native plants. Membership is not required to participate in the hikes. Angora’s annual schedule of hikes and where they occur is avail- able at angorahikingclub. org. COURTESY FORT STEVENS STATE PARK Fort Stevens MANZANITA — Muttzanita Festival 2018 — Manza- nita’s 10th annual festival celebrating dogs — is just around the corner! This years’ event is Saturday, Sept. 8, right on the beach. This year, the festival will be a block party on First Street, at Laneda Avenue. We will have local businesses and vendor booths, games and contests keeping festival- goers engaged during a full day of activities. The day is packed with dog- and human-related contests and hilarious activities, demonstrations, gourmet dog biscuits, numerous vendor booths, an animal costume contest and pet parade down main street that morning. The day’s events come to a close at 3 p.m. The festival welcomes well-behaved dogs and cats of all sizes and shapes (and their humans) who are at least six months old and on a short leash. Purchase a t-shirt in support of our fundrais- ing efforts for Tillamook County Animal Aid. Pick up tricks and ideas from local dog trainers. Learn how to get your dog involved in becoming a therapy dog. Be a hero and give a second chance to one of our shelter pets if you are looking for your forever friend. You can participate even if you don’t have a furry friend by becoming a judge! Spend the weekend at any of our pet-friendly inns, hotels, B&Bs or homes available for rent. Your support of our silent auction items will go directly to Til- lamook County Animal Aid to assist them with covering medical expenses for the rescues. The pet with the most votes wins the election. The new mayor will be sworn in at 10:15 a.m., then ride with their human in the lead car of the Pet Parade.
