Jewell returns
to the gridiron
The Daily Astorian
Jewell football is back in
business.
After an abbreviated
season in 2016 and noth-
ing at all in 2017, the Blue
Jays have landed in the sev-
en-team Special District 4,
as part of the OSAA’s new
six-man football division at
the 1A level.
As of the second week of
practice, Jewell head coach
Joel Johnston had eight
players on the roster, and
the Jays have a slate of six
games on the schedule.
After
opening
this
year with three straight
home games against Pow-
ers, McKenzie and Trian-
gle Lake, Jewell will finish
with three consecutive road
games, at Eddyville Charter,
Gilchrist and Triangle Lake.
THE DISTRICT
In addition to Jewell, spe-
cial district 4 teams include
Alsea, Eddyville Charter,
Gilchrist, McKenzie, Pow-
ers and Triangle Lake.
Jewell was 0-4 as a
Class 1A independent team
in 2016, when they played
Alsea and junior varsity
teams from Falls City, Per-
rydale and Oregon School
for the Deaf.
Jewell did not field a
team in 2015, after going 0-7
overall in 2014. The Blue
Jays were 3-2 as a mem-
ber of the Casco League in
2013.
THE BLUE JAYS
Jewell’s roster of eight
players includes juniors
Ryan Kane and Joshua Ruch,
and sophomores Edward
Berg and Aiden Bixel.
The remainder of the ros-
ter is made up of freshmen:
Cyrus Blodgett, Reid Dun-
can, Jackson Gnuschke and
Bradley Rogers, who will
be a team captain along with
Kane.

fter two so-so sea-
sons, the Jewell Blue
Jays’ volleyball pro-
gram took flight again in 2017.
Jewell went two straight
years (2015 and 2016) with
just five victories each, before
head coach Jessica Miller
led the team to an 11-9 mark
last season, 8-4 in the Casco
League.
The
third-place
fin-
ish earned the Jays a No. 21
ranking (out of 64 at the 1A
level) and a berth in the state
playoffs.
Alsea defeated Jewell in
three games in a first-round
match, but the groundwork
has been set, and the Jays are
looking to pick up where they
left off.

already off to a 2-1 start for

Jewell had just two seniors
last year (Niqui Blodgett and
Emma Guillen), and the Jays
only have two seniors this sea-
son: hitter Lillian Kaczenski
and outside hitter/middle
blocker Cheyenne Stapleton.
On top of that, the perpet-
ually young Jewell team only
has two juniors on the cur-
rent roster, Haley Norman and
Haven Shaw.
Rounding out this year’s
lineup, the Blue Jays have
sophomores Stella Gilmore,
Aliyah Hart, Lillie Meier and
Almeda Phillips, and fresh-
men Kiera Butori and Delilah
Crawford.
Assisting Miller will be
former Jewell player Jesika
(Kaczenski) Crook.
