separate areas at Rose Creek Retreat

ment. Travel was a luxury or
seen as a waste of money.”
Her first overseas trip was
to Mexico with her sister,
Danielle. It opened her eyes
to the value of experienc-
ing new locales. A later, sev-
en-country solo trip to Africa
whetted her appetite for more
memorable adventures.
“I decided to think more
about life goals than career
goals,” said Jerahian. “I dived
with white sharks, saw the
gorillas in Rwanda and took
a hot-air balloon ride over the
Serengeti,” she recalled. Her
current trip, which began in
June, will be chronicled on
her blog, www.ladywitha-
passport.com
She first flew to Alaska
for mountain climbing train-
ing before returning home to
Los Angeles to pack her car
and set off north. After Cali-
fornia, she enjoyed Oregon’s
spectacular scenery around
Crater Lake before cross-
ing into Washington. “I have
chosen to do fewer things,
but spend more time in each
place,” she said. “I am com-
fortable being alone, coming
out of my comfort zone.”
Her selection of the Long
Beach Peninsula followed
positive contacts during five
months of planning when
Farther up the hill and hid-
den in the woods are more
campsites set out along a
small creek winding down to
the river. A short hike takes
campers to a private tepee-
like lean-to. Amid the ferns,
firs and alder around the camp-
grounds are all types of edible
plants, including several types
of berries.
“It’s a forest garden of edi-
bles,” Mertz said.
Most of the money made
from campers goes back into
restoring the land, and the 10
percent fee taken by Hipcamp
covers advertising the camp-
ground to visitors from around
the world, Mertz said. Along
with fees to Hipcamp, the
campground pays local lodg-
ing taxes.
Hipcamp now includes
more than 3,500 private camp-
sites, cabins, RVs, trailers, tree
houses, yurts and other rentals
covering roughly 7,000 acres
of private land.
Alicia Sprague, in Clatsop
County’s taxation department,
said staff have so far reached
out to two campsites advertis-
ing through Hipcamp to collect
the quarterly lodging taxes.
Both of Clatsop County’s
sites are located on farms near
Elsie along U.S. Highway 26.

Operators like Mertz are
optimistic about what sites
like Hipcamp can do to pro-
mote tourism in often econom-
ically depressed rural areas.
Western Wahkiakum County
had largely been written off
economically since cannery
towns along the Columbia dis-
appeared, but now the region
is drawing people through its
proximity to water and wild-
life, he said.
“It’s like an ecotourism
renaissance,” he said.

“She was so nice to
deal with and provided me
with so much information,”
said Jerahian, who hiked
around Cape Disappoint-
ment, enjoyed Waikiki and
Long Beach, visited the Kite
Museum and dined at Pick-
led Fish.
“It’s been great here,” she
said during a stop for tea at
Abbracci in downtown Long
Beach. “Everybody knows
each other.”
Checking off 50 states,
ending in Hawaii, will take
her until mid-February. The
international part is esti-
mated to take 2 1/2 years.
She is mindful that seven
summits will be taxing.
“I am 34 not 22, but it will
be a chance to push myself
to new things,” she said.
“It makes me a better, well-
rounded person, experienc-
ing nature and culture. In
some ways, this is real life —
you have no control over it.”
While the itinerary is
planned — somewhat — its
informality and flexibility
suits her.
“It is exciting to meet
people and new situations,”
Jerahian said, describing her
grassroots approach. “It’s not
about a selfie of me on the
rooftop of a fancy hotel.”
Timber: Last easy-to-access harvest is going on this summer

Hampton will continue
work in the watershed for
the next three to five weeks,
depending on the weather. The
areas the company is working
in will be reforested. Hampton
is thinning the site heavily and
the city plans to mix in cedar
seedlings. “The highest-value
tree we can grow here,” said
Ben Hayes, the city’s consult-
ing forester.
The city has faced issues of
low availability when it comes
to finding seedlings to replant
harvested areas. This year,
Hayes sourced seedlings from
Silvaseed Co., a conifer seed
company and nursery that has
sold young trees to Astoria for
many years.
Right now, logging prices
are up, said Mike Gerdes, who
handles seed and seedling sales
for Silvaseed. It’s good news
for cities and companies look-
ing to sell, but it also means
demand for seedlings is high.
At the same time, Gerdes
has seen a number of coni-
fer nurseries go out of busi-
ness, putting more pres-
sure on the nursery spaces
that remain even as there is a
higher demand for space to
rear seedlings.
The Christmas tree mar-
ket has also rebounded after a
long slump. Tree prices are up
and people are getting back to
planting Christmas tree farms
in response. In some cases,
large timber companies like
Weyerhaeuser have taken on
more land and nursery space
they used to be able to spare
for outside production.
On top of all of this, Gerdes
said, “There hasn’t been the
greatest cone crops the last
eight or 10 years on a consis-
tent basis.”
And: “We’ve had at least
three above-average tempera-
ture summers, very dry, and so
the seedlings that were planted
the last three or four months,
there’s been a significant
amount of mortality out there
whether it’s in the woods or on
(tree farms),” he said.
Timber and tree farm busi-
nesses might have had to go
back out and replant two or
three times, another source of
pressure on nurseries.
Astoria sources seedlings
from a variety of companies,
but the city’s requests to Sil-
vaseed tend to be for 10,000 to
20,000 young trees at a time,
Gerdes said. The request is
small compared to the 8 to 9
million seedlings Gerdes will
have in production each year.
“As a general rule, if they
get in early enough, I can sup-
ply those things,” he said. “But
you need to shop early.”
