2018 REGATTA DIGNITARIES
ulie Flues grew up in Astoria and had
the opportunity to participate in the
Regatta from a young age. She has
fond memories of attending the
Grand Land Parade, playing in the
Regatta softball tournament and watching the
visiting ships come to town. She is a graduate of
Astoria High School. After high school, Flues
worked at Astoria’s American Red Cross as
executive director for 18 years.
kip Hauke grew up in Astoria. He
went to Astoria High School and
graduated from Pacific Lutheran
University with a degree in business.
After graduation, Hauke returned to
Astoria to operate his family’s business, Sentry
Markets. After operating the business for 40 years,
Hauke sold the property of Sentry Markets after it
had been owned by the Hauke family for 110
years. He joined the Astoria-Warrenton Area
Chamber of Commerce and became the director
in 2005. His position with the chamber was a great
fit, and allowed him to continue to serve the
community through mentorship, advocacy and
volunteerism.

Six years ago, Flues began working at the
Columbia River Maritime Museum as the
membership and marketing manager. Flues is
very involved with the community. She serves on
the boards of United Way of Clatsop County, the
Astoria Rotary Club, the Oregon Tour and Travel
Alliance, the Assistance League of the Columbia
Pacific and the Clatsop Community College
Foundation. In January, Flues won the George
Award, the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of
Commerce citizen of the year honor.
In her spare time, Flues enjoys volunteering in the
community, spending time with her son, Logan,
and attending his baseball games. This year, Flues
is looking forward to serving as the Regatta
President and attending her favorite Regatta
event, the Highwater Boat Parade.

JULIE FLUES
Hauke retired this year after serving for 13 years.
He handed the role off to David Reid. Hauke is one
of only two people who have won the chamber’s
George Award, Astoria’s citizen-of-the-year honor
award, twice.

Hauke remembers serving on the Regatta court
once before: as a train bearer for the Regatta
queen, Lydia Dorn Seabold in 1952 when the
coordination was held at the Astoria Armory. He
still bows to Dorn when he sees her around town.
Hauke appreciates that the Regatta brings the
community together every year.
