Journalist Lehmann speaks on
‘Prosperity and Politics’
The Daily Astorian
Journalist Chris Lehmann
discusses “Prosperity and Pol-
itics” in the first Speak Up!, a
series of conversations hosted
by Indivisible North Coast Ore-
gon (INCO). This free public
event is at 7 p.m. Wednesday in
the Lovell Showroom, 426 14
th St. The doors open at 6 p.m.,
with no-host food and drinks.
Lehmann is the author of
three books, including “The
Money Cult: Capitalism,
Christianity, and the Unmak-
ing of the American Dream.”
Based in Washington, D.C.,
he is senior editor and col-

College advises GED test hopefuls
The Daily Astorian
Clatsop Community Col-
lege will hold an orientation
Monday for its General Edu-
cational Development test
preparation program.
The college’s GED
classes are open to people
age 16 and older who wish to
earn a high school credential.
Participants younger than 18
must provide a form from
their high school releas-
ing them from compulsory
education before attending
classes or taking the GED
tests. Classes are offered in
English or Spanish. The col-
lege also offers English lan-
guage classes and tutoring
for students.
There is no cost for
enrollment, and study mate-
rials are provided. The GED
certificate enables students
to pursue further education
and improve employment
status.
The orientation will be
from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday in
Columbia Hall Room 114 on
the main Lexington campus
at 1651 Lexington Ave. in
Astoria.

A Purification Service at Common
Ground Interspiritual Fellowship is held on
the first Sunday of each month from 9:30 to

This service is not defined by any par-
ticular belief system, and is especially

St. Mary, Star of the Sea
The Knights of Columbus are put-
ting on a Sunday Breakfast after the 8:30
and 10:30 a.m. Masses at St. Mary, Star
of the Sea Catholic Church in the newly
renovated Leahy Auditorium, 1425 Grand
Ave. The July Knight for the month is
Dan Ewald, the lady is Linda Sitkowski,
and the family is that of Linda and Russ

At the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass, the
Camp Catechesis children are participat-
ing in some of the Mass ministries. Camp
participants are encouraged to wear their
camp T-shirts and jeans.
Eucharistic minister training is at 11
a.m. Thursday at St. Francis de Sales Mis-
sion, 867 Fifth Ave. in Hammond. This
training is for anyone interested in becom-
ing a eucharistic minister, or a refresher

The St. Vincent de Sales Food Bank,
located behind the church on 15th Avenue,
needs paper towels and condiments such
as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pick-
les, etc. The food bank is open from 1 to 3
p.m. Tuesdays, and from 10 a.m. to noon
Friday and Saturday.
During June, the food pantry assisted 116
families, and 122 weekend food bags were
delivered to Astoria School District students.
Astoria Church of Christ
The Astoria Church of Christ, 692
12th St., hosts the Oregon City Church of
Christ youth group at the 10:30 a.m. ser-
vice. The group’s leader, Steve Haney,
speaks on the life of Peter from the Book

Grace Episcopal
The Labyrinth is available for walking
from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Grace Episco-
pal Church, 1545 Franklin Ave. A laby-
rinth introduction is offered at 3 p.m., upon

complete the walk.
Grace offers an ecumenical Taizé Prayer
& Song service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, con-
sisting of simple repeated chants, periods of
silence, prayers individual and communal,

Astoria Seventh-day Adventist
The Astoria Seventh-day Adven-

ing a vacation Bible school for children

Wednesday through Aug. 10. The theme
this year is “Heaven,” and there are sto-
ries, songs and crafts centered around
heaven, including how to choose the
right road to heaven, what heaven is like
and entering through the pearly gates.
There will snacks and outdoor play, and if
weather permits, there will be water play,
so children should bring their swimsuits.
