Trump calls on
Sessions to end Mueller’s
Russia probe
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
called today for Attorney General Jeff Sessions
to put an end to special counsel Robert Mueller’s
Russia probe, a day after Trump’s former cam-
paign chairman went on trial.
Taking to Twitter to complain about the
ongoing Russia investigation, Trump said Ses-
sions “should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right
now, before it continues to stain our country any
further.”
The relationship between Sessions and the
president has been strained for more than a
year, since the attorney general recused himself
from investigations relating to the 2016 election
because of Sessions’ role on the Trump campaign.
Mueller’s team is accountable to Deputy Attorney
General Rod Rosenstein.
Tuesday marked the first day of Paul
Manafort’s trial on charges of tax evasion and
bank fraud brought by Mueller’s team, charges
that stemmed from Manafort’s consulting work
for Ukraine, for which he allegedly received mil-
lions he did not report to the U.S. government.
Seeking to distance himself from his ex-cam-
paign chairman, Trump said, “He worked for me
for a very short time.”
Manafort’s involvement in the Trump cam-
paign spanned six months, and he led efforts to
secure the GOP nomination for Trump in 2016.
Trump said the charges against Manafort
“have nothing to do with Collusion.” Potential
coordination between Russian government agents
and the Trump campaign is still a matter of inves-
tigation by Mueller’s team, which is also investi-
gating potential obstruction of justice by the pres-
ident. Trump called claims of collusion “a Hoax.”
Cheaper short-term
health plans have
coverage gaps
WASHINGTON — The Trump adminis-
tration today cleared the way for insurers to sell
short-term health plans as a bargain alternative to
pricey Obama-law policies for people struggling
with high premiums.
But the new policies don’t have to cover exist-
ing medical conditions and they offer limited ben-
efits. That may not translate to broad consumer
appeal among people who need an individual
policy.
“For many who’ve got pre-existing conditions
or who have other health worries, the Obamacare
plans might be right for them,” Health and Human
Services Secretary Alex Azar said. “We’re just
providing more options.”
Officials say the plans can now last up to 12
months and be renewed for up to 36 months.
But there’s no federal guarantee of renewabil-
ity. Plans will carry a disclaimer that they don’t
meet the Affordable Care Act’s requirements and
safeguards.
Unable to repeal much of the Obama-era law,
Trump’s administration has tried to undercut
how it’s supposed to work and to create options
for people who don’t qualify for ACA subsidies
based on their income.

lawyers during jury selection Tuesday.
Judge in Manafort trial:
Don’t use word ‘oligarchs’
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The judge in Paul Manafort’s trial told prosecutors today not to use
the word “oligarch” to describe wealthy Ukrainians who paid millions to the former Trump
campaign chairman.
Manafort is accused of orchestrating a multimillion-dollar conspiracy to evade U.S. tax
and banking laws. His defense attorneys say he isn’t to blame because he left the details of his
finances to others.
U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III told attorneys for special counsel Robert Mueller that the
term “oligarchs” has a pejorative meaning and using it is not relevant to the fraud and tax
charges against Manafort.
The proceedings could last weeks. Prosecutor Uzo Asonye told the jury during his opening
statement Tuesday that Manafort considered himself above the law as he funneled tens of mil-
lions of dollars through offshore accounts. That “secret income” was used to pay for personal
expenses such as a $21,000 watch, a $15,000 jacket made of ostrich and more than $6 million
worth of real estate paid for in cash, Asonye said.
“A man in this courtroom believed the law did not apply to him — not tax law, not banking
law,” Asonye said as he sketched out the evidence gathered by special counsel Robert Muel-
ler’s team in Manafort’s bank fraud and tax evasion trial.
Manafort’s trial is the first arising from Mueller’s investigation into potential ties between
Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia. It opened with extraordinary anticipation
amid unresolved questions about whether Trump associates coordinated with the Kremlin to
tip the election in the president’s favor.
But it was clear from the outset that the case would not address that question: Prosecu-
tors did not once reference Manafort’s work for the Trump campaign nor mention Mueller’s
broader and ongoing investigation into Russian election interference. Mueller was not present
in the courtroom.
The other 31 people charged by Mueller so far have either pleaded guilty or are Russians
seen as unlikely to enter an American courtroom. Three Russian companies have also been
charged.
Officials are hoping short-term plans will fit
the bill. Next year, there will be no tax penalty for
someone who opts for short-term coverage ver-
sus a comprehensive plan, so more people might
consider the option. More short-term plans will be
available starting this fall.
But critics say the plans are “junk insurance”
that could lead to unwelcome surprises if a poli-
cyholder gets sick, and will entice healthy people
away from the law’s markets, raising premiums
for those left. Under the Obama administration,
such plans were limited to three months’ duration.
Some states do not permit them.
A major insurer group quickly expressed
disapproval.

tion of slimmed-down policies that do not pro-

Mexico plane hit burst
of hail before crash
DURANGO, Mexico — A U.S. passenger
aboard a flight that crashed on takeoff in north-
ern Mexico said today that a strong burst of wind
and hail hit the Aeromexico jetliner, apparently
knocking it back to ground, where there were
only moments to evacuate before it burned.
Alberto Herrera, 35, of Chicago, described
the terrifying moments when the plane briefly
became airborne Tuesday before smacking bel-
ly-down onto a field beyond the edge of the
runway.
“You start gaining speed and as soon as you
start taking off all of the sudden the plane starts
struggling and it’s getting hit with hail,” said Her-
rera, who was visiting the city of Durango for the
baptism of his cousin’s baby.
“The higher up we went into the storm the
heavier the hail got and more wind got to us,”
he recounted from his hotel room. “Then all of a
sudden the plane starts rocking and it starts seri-
ously, seriously moving around and then hitting
the ground.”
The fire around the wings eliminated the pos-
sibility of using wing exits, so Herrera said he
moved toward a back exit and started helping
other people leave the craft. Many walked to the
end of the runway to wait for emergency vehicles.
All 99 passengers and four crewmembers
made it off the plane, but the pilot was severely
injured.

were on their way today to Hawaii for analysis
and identification. The U.S. military believes the
bones are those of U.S. servicemen and poten-
tially servicemen from other United Nations
member countries who fought alongside the U.S.
on behalf of South Korea during the war.
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and the com-
mander of U.S. forces in Asia, Adm. Phil David-
son, were expected to speak at a ceremony mark-
ing the arrival of the remains on U.S. soil and the
beginning of a long process to identify the bones.
North Korea handed over the remains last
week. A U.S. military plane made a rare trip into
North Korea to retrieve the 55 cases.
About 7,700 U.S. soldiers are listed as missing
from the 1950-53 Korean War and about 5,300 of
the remains are believed to still be in North Korea.
The agency identifies remains of servicemen
killed in past conflicts. It typically uses bones,
teeth and DNA to identify remains along with
any items that may have been found with remains
like uniforms, dog tags and wedding rings. But
North Korea only provided one dog tag with the
55 boxes it handed over last week.
Before the remains were put on military planes
bound for Hawaii, hundreds of U.S. and South
Korean troops gathered at a hanger at the Osan
base in South Korean for the repatriation cere-
mony, which included a silent tribute, a rifle salute
and the playing of the U.S. and South Korean
national anthems and dirges in front of the U.N.
flag-covered metal cases containing the remains.
“For the warrior, this is a cherished duty, a
commitment made to one another before going
into battle, and passed on from one generation of
warriors to the next,” Vincent Brooks, chief of the
U.S. military in South Korea, said in a speech.
A U.S. defense official said Tuesday that it
probably will take months if not years to fully
determine individual identities from the remains.
