11 House Republicans
seek impeachment of
DOJ’s Rosenstein
WASHINGTON — House Republicans
sharply escalated their months-long clash with the
Justice Department as a group of 11 conservatives
introduced articles of impeachment against Dep-
uty Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the official
who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s
Russia investigation.
The move late Wednesday came after months
of criticism aimed at the department — and the
Russia investigation in particular — from Trump
and his Republican allies in Congress. Trump
has fumed about Mueller’s probe and repeatedly
called it a “witch hunt,” a refrain echoed by some
of the lawmakers. The impeachment effort is led
by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, who
talks to Trump frequently and often defends him
to his colleagues.
Meadows said this morning that he would
not force an immediate vote on the impeachment
resolution, even though he could use procedural
maneuvers to do so. The House leaves this after-
noon for a five-week recess.
It is unclear whether there would be enough
support in the party to pass the resolution, if a vote
were held. Republican leaders have not signed on
to the effort and are unlikely to back it.
Meadows, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and the other
Republicans who introduced the resolution have
criticized Rosenstein and Justice Department offi-
cials for not being responsive enough as House
committees have requested documents related to
the beginning of the Russia investigation and a
closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clin-
ton’s emails.
The five articles charge Rosenstein of “high
crimes and misdemeanors” for failing to produce
information to the committees, even though the
department has already provided lawmakers with
more than 800,000 documents, and of signing off
on what some Republicans say was improper sur-
veillance of a Trump adviser.
The resolution also goes directly after Rosen-
stein for his role in the ongoing Mueller investi-
gation, criticizing him for refusing to produce a
memo that outlines the scope of that investigation
and questioning whether the investigation was
started on legitimate grounds. Mueller is investi-
gating Russian interference in the 2016 election
and whether Trump’s campaign was in any way
involved.
It is highly unusual, if not unprecedented, for
lawmakers to demand documents that are part of
an ongoing criminal investigation.
US to impose
sanctions on Turkey
over detained pastor
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
says the United States will impose sanctions on
NATO ally Turkey over a detained American pas-
tor held on terror and espionage charges.
Shortly after the possibility of sanctions was
first announced today by Vice President Mike
Pence, Trump wrote on Twitter that the U.S. “will
impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long
time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson.”

Smoke from the Cranston Fire clouds the skies over Highway 243, south of Idyllwild, Calif.
Arson wildfire forces entire
California town to evacuate
IDYLLWILD, Calif. — A fast-moving wildfire — believed to have been sparked by arson
— tore through trees, burned five homes and forced evacuation orders for an entire mountain
town as California sweltered under a heat wave and battled ferocious fires at both ends of the
state.
Winds were calm early today and smoke drifted slowly over the so-called Cranston Fire, but
firefighters faced another day of high temperatures that could hit 100, low humidity and possi-
ble afternoon wind gusts that could create dangerous fire weather conditions.
The blaze erupted Wednesday in the San Jacinto Mountains east of Los Angeles and turned
into a wall of flame that torched timber and tinder-dry brush. In a matter of hours it grew to
7½ square miles.
About 3,200 people in the town of Idyllwild and nearby communities were ordered to evac-
uate. An estimated 600 homes were threatened.
The fire was the largest of at least five that police believe were purposely set Wednesday by
a man whose car was reportedly spotted at the starting point of the blaze in Riverside County,
officials said.
Brandon N. McGlover, 32, of Temecula was booked on suspicion of five counts of arson,
state fire officials said. It wasn’t clear whether he had an attorney.
Authorities ordered residents to leave Idyllwild and several neighboring communities,
home to about 12,000 people.
Horses and other animals were taken to shelters, as were several hundred children who were
evacuated from summer camps. About 200 were at a local high school serving as a shelter.
Pence’s initial announcement of possible sanc-
tions came at the close of a three-day conference
on religious freedom.
Brunson, 50, an evangelical Christian pastor
originally from North Carolina, was let out of jail
Wednesday, after 1 1/2 years, to serve house arrest
because of “health problems,” according to Tur-
key’s official Anadolu news agency.
Trump has repeatedly demanded Brunson’s
release and said on Twitter last week that the pas-
tor’s detention was “a total disgrace.” One of
Brunson’s attorneys is Jay Sekulow, who also rep-
resents Trump in the Russia investigation.
If convicted, Brunson pastor faces up to 15
years in prison for “committing crimes on behalf
of terror groups without being a member,” refer-
ences to outlawed Kurdish militants and the net-
work of a U.S-based Muslim cleric blamed for
a failed coup attempt. He could receive another
20 years if he is found guilty of espionage. He
strongly denies the charges.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has
previously linked Brunson’s return to the U.S. to
the extradition of cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Tur-
key’s government holds responsible for the failed
July 2016 military coup.
Gulen, who denies orchestrating the coup
attempt, lives in Pennsylvania. Turkish requests
for his arrest and extradition have not been
granted.
Clock ticks toward
reuniting families
separated at border
EL PASO, Texas — The Trump administration
faced a court-imposed deadline today to reunite
thousands of children and parents who were forc-
ibly separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, an enor-
mous logistical task brought on by its “zero toler-
ance” policy on illegal entry.
Authorities have identified 2,551 children 5
and older who may be covered by the order to be
reunited with their parents by today. That effort
was expected to fall short, partly because hun-
dreds of parents may have already been deported
without their children.
But, by focusing only those deemed by the
government to be “eligible” for reunification,
authorities are expected to claim success.
As of Tuesday, there were 1,012 parents reuni-
fied with their children in U.S. Immigration
and Customs Enforcement custody. Hundreds
more had been cleared and were just waiting on
transportation.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen
told members of Congress on Wednesday that the
administration was “on track” to meet the dead-
line, an assertion that was greeted with disbelief
and anger by the all-Democrat Congressional His-
panic Caucus, according to people who attended.
Nielsen declined to comment to reporters as she
left the closed-door meeting.
For the last two weeks, children have been
arriving steadily at ICE locations in Texas, Ari-
zona and New Mexico to be reunited with par-
ents. Faith-based and other groups have pro-
vided meals, clothing, legal advice and plane and
bus tickets. Parents are typically equipped with
ankle-monitoring bracelets and given court dates
before an immigration judge.
U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw in San Diego
commended the government Tuesday for its
recent efforts and for apparently being on track
to reunify the roughly 1,600 parents it deems eli-
gible, calling it “a remarkable achievement.” Yet
Sabraw also seized on the government’s assertion
that 463 parents may be outside the United States.
The Justice Department said this week that the
number was based on case files and under review,
signaling it could change.
“It is the reality of a policy that was in place that
resulted in large numbers of families being sepa-
rated without forethought as to reunification and
keeping track of people,” said Sabraw, an appoin-
tee of Republican President George W. Bush.
Lee Gelernt, an attorney for the American
Civil Liberties Union who represents the sep-
arated families, said the government is “letting
themselves off the hook” by focusing on those it
deems eligible and excluding parents who were
deported or haven’t been located.
Former cricket star
declares victory in
Pakistan election
ISLAMABAD — Former cricket star Imran
Khan declared victory today in Pakistan’s parlia-
mentary election that was marred by violence and
allegations of fraud, and he pledged to fight cor-
ruption and build a nation that bowed to no one.
Khan, who aspires to be the next prime min-
ister, said in a televised address that he wanted
good ties with his neighbors, including rival India,
and would seek a more equal relationship with the
United States.
He vowed to wipe out corruption, strengthen
institutions he called dysfunctional and regain
national pride by developing international rela-
tionships based on respect and equality.
Pakistan’s election commission has not yet
released final results from Wednesday’s vote, but
Khan has maintained a commanding lead, accord-
ing to projections from many TV stations. It’s still
unclear if his Tehreek-e-Insaf party, or PTI, would
get a simple majority or have to form a coalition
government. Election officials said an official
count was expected later today.
