can be art,” Campiche said.
“You can paint on the pots
to create color and depth.”
Look closely at his pots and
sculptures and you will often
discover abstract landscapes.
Campiche fires much of
his work in an anagama kiln,
a practice that is, he said, “as
old as civilization
Sat itself. The
link to our ancestors is one
of the appeals of pottery.”
Wood firing adds some-
thing of the unknown. The
clay and glazes take the fire
and smoke in ways that are
not entirely predictable,
adding an improvisation-
al aspect to the work that
Campiche calls, “chasing
the Zen in clay.”
In a similar fashion, Wie-
gardt compares his works
to jazz. “There is a relation-
ship to the work, the color,
paper and texture. There is
a structure and a technique,
and an improvisational,
dynamic process for both.”

Saturday, Oct. 6, at the
Columbia Pacific Heritage
Museum, 115 S.E. Lake St.,
Ilwaco, Wash. The museum
is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
