Action continues today through Sunday at Frank Wade Park, where Hilander Dental (the Lower Columbia Baseball Club’s AAA Legion team) will play “503 Baseball” today at 12:30 p.m. Hilander will face the Corvallis Marketmen, 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Knappa’s Eli Takalo pitched Hilander to Thursday’s win, giving up just five hits with six strikeouts and no walks in the complete-game victory. Offensively, Hilander scored five runs in the top of the first inning, as Kaleb Miller, Ben Bergonzine, Dale Takalo and Pay- ton Westerholm all drove in runs. Miller and Trey Hageman were each 2-for-3 with a double, while Dale Takalo had a triple. Hageman also had an unassisted double play. Seaside driver third in Rose Cup event PORTLAND — Seaside racer Daniel Jesse placed third in the Vintage category of the 58th running of the Rose Cup Races held last weekend at the Portland International Raceway. The Rose Cup Races are the Pacific Northwest’s premier amateur road racing event, which feature racing competitors from both the Oregon Region Sports Car Club of America and the Cascade Sports Car Club. The racers compete in four amateur race groups: Spec Racer Ford, Great American Stock Car Series, Spec Miata and a Vin- tage race group. This year’s event also highlighted the return of professional sports car racing to PIR for the first time since 2009. The Pirelli World Challenge, considered North America’s top GT production-based road racing sports car series, brought more than 20 different manufacturers and 40 separate models to the Rose Cup Races, with four race groups and seven classes. The weekend marked the first time Pirelli World Challenge has raced in Portland since 2005. Jesse took third in the Vintage category behind Erik Dolson, of Sisters, and Norm Daniels, of Vancouver, Washington. The official winner of Sunday’s 58th Rose Cup race was the team of 17-year-old Parker Chase and veteran Ryan Dalziel, who drove their Audi R8 LMS to victory in the GT SprintX feature. Crescent Valley rallies to defeat Warrenton CORVALLIS — Warrenton held an early lead, but Crescent Valley rallied for a 7-4 win in a first round game of the Junior Baseball state tournament Thursday evening in Corvallis. Tournament action continues today through Sunday at Cres- cent Valley High School. The Raiders are the host team for the tournament, but War- renton was the home team in Thursday’s game. And the Warriors grabbed an early 2-0 lead, scoring a run in each of the first two innings, with Austin Little’s single up the middle driving in Ethan Caldwell in the second. But Crescent Valley scored twice in the third inning, then tacked on three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Warrenton scored two runs in the third to briefly close to within 5-4. Devin Jackson was the starting pitcher for the Warriors, and finished with five strikeouts and nine walks. “He wasn’t as sharp as he usually is (Jackson walked just eight all of last spring), but in his defense he was at football camp all week,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “And when you’re playing football Sunday through Wednesday, it’s tough to be razor-sharp on Thursday. But, this is just the time of year when kids are doing other things, and we didn’t quite get enough time in as we would have liked.” Little and Kale’o Kapua each had a double for the Warriors, while both teams finished with just six hits. Ethan Janssen had a double for Crescent Valley. Jackson Van Eyk pitched six-and-a-third innings for the Raiders, before giving way to a relief pitcher for the final two outs. Jackson, Gabe Breitmeyer and Dalton Knight all saw time on the mound for Warrenton, which plays today in the conso- lation round against Silverton, 2:30 p.m. on the junior varsity field. — The Daily Astorian Zach Johnson takes early lead in British Open CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — The way golf has been going the last few years, it would be reasonable to see the name “John- son” atop the leaderboard and assume it belonged to the No. 1 player in the world. But not necessarily at the British Open. Zach Johnson — not Dustin — already has his name on the claret jug. And the way he handled the rain Friday in his round of 4-under 67, he might have a chance to see it on that precious silver trophy again. Johnson holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th and had a one-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood at the midway point of the second round. Fleetwood, the top player on the European Tour last year, put together the best round of the week at Car- noustie with a 65. — Associated Press SCOREBOARD LOCAL SPORTS SCHEDULE TODAY Junior baseball — (Division 1 state tournament, at Crescent Valley HS): TBA vs. Seaside, 2:30 p.m.; Warrenton vs. Silverton, 2:30 p.m. BASEBALL Hilander Dental 9, Michael’s Toyota 1 Hilander 510 102 0—9 11 1 Michael’s 000 001 0—1 5 1 W: E.Takalo. Hours after The Asso- ciated Press reported that Miami Dolphins players who protest on the field during the anthem could be suspended for up to four games under a team policy issued this week, the league and the players union issued a joint state- ment late Thursday night say- ing the two sides are talking things out. “The NFL and NFLPA, through recent discussions, have been working on a res- olution to the anthem issue. In order to allow this con- structive dialogue to con- tinue, we have come to a standstill agreement on the NFLPA’s grievance and on the NFL’s anthem policy. World champion Sagan won a sprint finish by a wheel length to claim Stage 13, a 169.5-kilometer (105-mile) leg from Bourg d’Oisans to Valence in less than four hours. After overzealous fans marred Thomas’ win on Thurs- day atop the Alpe d’Huez, the otherwise complete calm of Friday’s leg was briefly dis- turbed by a man on the road- side who tossed a smoke bomb into the center of the peloton as it passed by with 16 kilome- ters left. Besides spitting out yellow smoke, the bomb appeared to do no harm. Thomas took charge of the race with impressive wins atop summit finishes on the previ- ous two days. The Welsh rider for Sky had no trouble maintaining his advantage of 1 minute, 39 sec- ond over defending champion Froome on the flat ride that came after three grueling days in the Alps. Both Team Sky riders fin- ished safely in the pack with their top rivals. Tom Dumoulin stayed third overall at 1:50 behind. Primoz Roglic was fourth at 2:46, and Romain Bardet was fifth at 3:07 back. Sagan timed his move per- fectly, charging forward to overtake runner-up Alexander Kristoff and Arnaud Demare, who finished third, at the fin- ish line.
