something a little unorthodox in store for
you rock fans!
We found some zany fellas that call
themselves The Weird Kids, and they’re
ready to rock your socks off at 9 p.m.
Saturday, July 21. Five bucks at the door
buys you four new freakish friends with
quirky character, strange sounds and
eccentric energy.
Enjoy some unconventional and
colorful alternative rock with off-the-wall
attitude. The Labor Temple is located at

with something to say
ASTORIA — The next installment of the
Astoria Library’s 10th Street Stage — a
four-part outdoor concert series held on
the library steps — takes place at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, July 25, with a performance
by local bluegrass duo The Horsenecks.
All ages are welcome. Admission is
free.
The Horsenecks play hard-hitting and
heartfelt Old Time and classic Bluegrass
music. Portlander Gabrielle Macrae and
Liverpool native Barry Southern teamed
up after meeting at a music festival in
England in 2012. Sharing a deep love
of traditional music, the two multi-in-
strumentalists have been performing,
teaching and touring across the U.S. and
the UK ever since. Featuring classic and
original songs, they are deeply rooted in
tradition while bringing fresh new materi-
al to the genre.

Street Stage is sponsored by the Liber-
ty Theatre, the Astoria Oregon Public
Library Foundation and the Astor Library
Friends Association.

‘slacker country’
on a Friday night
ASTORIA — Dust off them dancin’ boots
and get ready for a night of self-dubbed
“slacker country” with local favorite Bri-
an Bovenizer and the New Old Stock.
This one-night-only show at Labor
Temple Bar takes place 10 p.m. Friday,
July 20, with support from The Waysiders
and Western Centuries. Five bucks gets
you in the door to see all three bands!
The event is for people 21 and older.

LONG BEACH, WASH. — Ara Lee sings
gospel, soul and blues at the Peninsula
Arts Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21,
with guitarist Chris Hayes.
Lee calls herself a singer-songwriter,
but the image of a wispy, soft-voiced,
guitar strummer that might come to
mind couldn’t be farther from what she
does.
Call it soul, call it folk, call it gospel
— Lee sings like a woman with some-
thing to say, in a voice that makes you
stop and listen, with lyrics that make
you remember why you decided to be
human once upon a time. Known for
her commanding stage presence, Lee’s
shows, often called “musical church,”
cut straight to the gut.
Raised in the deep South, in a
church where instruments were not al-
lowed, Lee grew up shape-note singing,
learning to make music only with her
voice.
A move to New York City as a
teenager gave her the chance to use her
vocal chops beyond her front porch,
and she began a 10-year incarnation
working as a backup singer and studio
vocalist. Now based in Portland, Lee’s
roots in Appalachia color the songs she
writes.
Hayes has been a go-to string
player in the Northwest for many years,
appearing in the lineups of several pop-
ular bands as well as on numerous CDs.
