Here come Giants in the Trees!
Astoria Library
launches
concert series
ASTORIA — Enjoy music and refresh-
ments and share the excitement about
the future of the Astoria Library at
10th Street Stage, a four-part outdoor
concert series situated on the steps of
the Astoria Library, 450 10th St.
The series begins at 6 p.m. Wednes-
day, July 11, with performances by
musicians Laura Lewis and Christopher
Reyne.
During the kick-off event, architec-
tural plans for the library’s renovation
will be on display, and information
about the building project will be avail-
able. All ages are welcome. Admission
is free.
Raised under the fog banks of the
San Francisco Bay on a heavy dose of
country, folk and blues from old Clem-
ent Street, Lewis is building her foun-
dations in the vibrant West Coast music
scene. Her performances have captivat-
ed and engaged audiences from festival
crowds, bar stools and the windows of
coffee shops. Lewis is currently writing
and recording her first solo project.
Reyne is an Astoria-based artist.
His debut album, “A Stranger at the
Wheel,” is a collection of lush, layered
soundscapes with lyrics that, as Mod
City puts it, “feel like honest journal
entries put to music.” The Deli writes,
“Catchy pop-esque hooks and complex
musical textures pair with Reyne’s
melodic voice to make it clear that this
performer is dedicated to entertaining
his listeners.” Reyne is working on a
new album slated for release in the fall.
The series will continue with a
performance by Lucy Barna at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, July 18.
10th Street Stage is a program of
the Astoria Library, sponsored by the
Liberty Theatre, the Astoria Oregon
Public Library Foundation and the
Astor Library Friends Association.

Christopher Reyne
LONG BEACH, WASH. — Giants in
the Trees will perform a live
show at 2 p.m. Saturday, July
7, at the Veterans Field Main
Stage in Long Beach, Wash.
This all-ages show is free.
Giants in the Trees, a
new band from Wahkiakum
County, are Krist Novoselić,
Ray Prestegard, Jillian Raye
and Erik Friend.
Novoselić, a bass and ac-
cordion player, is a founding
member of the band Nirvana
who helped change the face
of music in 1991 with the
release of the album “Nev-
ermind.” Novoselić’s bass
helped make that one of the
best-known rock records of
all time. Giants in the Trees
is his first real local musical
project.
Prestegard was born and
raised on the Lower Colum-
bia. He brings accomplished
musicianship to the band
with electric guitar, lap slide
and box guitar.

Giants in the Trees
Raye does vocals, banjo
and guitar. Originally from
California, Raye brings a
keen sense of vocal phrasing
to her strong singing style.
She also created and per-
formed all of the rich harmo-
ny vocals on the album.
Friend is also a former
Californian. Moving to
Seattle to work for Micro-
soft, Friend is a true techie.
His musical talents go
beyond percussion to include
mandolin and other acoustic
string instruments. He also
recorded the band’s self-titled
album at the Murky Slough
studio.

Soak up some Sunbathe at Voodoo Room
ASTORIA — Sunbathe,
an indie pop-rock band,
performs along with Monica
& The Shy Boys, 8 p.m.
Wednesday, July 11, at the
Colombian Theater Voodoo
Room. There is a suggested
$5 donation.
Sunbathe is composed
of members of the bands
Typhoon and Genders and
who have, collectively,
toured with the likes of The
Decemberists, Built to Spill,
Yann Tiersen, Portugal. The
Man and more.
Sunbathe is the devas-
tatingly catchy, fuzzed-out
pop band brought to you
by songwriter Maggie May
Morris. Suffused with lyrical
honesty and a raw perfor-
mance style, Morris com-
mands the stage, coasting
along on an abundance
of hooks and lighthearted
guitar.

Sunbathe
Backed by Pieter Hilton
and Shannon Steele (Ty-
phoon), Sunbathe has
quickly gained notoriety for
their captivating live perfor-
mances.
The self-titled debut from
Sunbathe shows the many
sides of Morris’ songwrit-
ing abilities yet maintains a
cohesive structure through
radiantly pop-minded
arrangements. With another
release on the horizon, Sun-
bathe is one of today’s most
promising acts.
