Dogs have their day at Fort Clatsop
FORT CLATSOP — The 33
people of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition wintered
at Fort Clatsop in 1805 to
1806. The 34th “member”
of this expedition was
Seaman, Capt. Meriwether
Lewis’ Newfoundland dog.
The 25th annual Sea-
man’s Day honoring the dog
of the Corps of Discovery
will be held Wednesday,
July 11, at Lewis and Clark
National Historical Park,
Fort Clatsop.
According to the ex-
plorers’ journals, Seaman
served as a watchdog,
hunter, retriever, companion
and diplomat during the
two-and-a-half year voyage
of discovery. The park has
invited guest Newfoundland
dogs and their people to
volunteer this day. The spe-
cial event offers visitors an
opportunity to learn about
Seaman and meet some
modern Newfoundlands.
The day’s schedule: a
flintlock program (10:30
a.m.); Netul River Trail walk
(11 a.m.); “Our Dog Seaman”
talk (11:30 a.m.); meeting the
Newfoundland dogs (12:30
p.m.); flintlock program (1:30
p.m.); Netul River Trail walk
(2 p.m.); meeting the New-
foundland dogs (2:30 p.m.);
“Our Dog Seaman” talk (3:30

iar variety or watercolor

paintings — vivid colors,

tail, realistic or abstract.

Kristy Kutch is an
internationally known
colored pencil artist, the
author of several books
and videos on painting
with colored pencils. She
will be giving a two-day
workshop Wednesday
and Thursday, July 18
and 19, at the Astoria Art
Loft.
Kutch is a master
teacher, and generous-
ly gives colored pencil
painting supplies to
participants. Her work-
shops are appropriate
for beginners as well as
advanced artists.
