Mexico’s Lopez Obrador claims
historic win, broad mandate
MEXICO CITY — Furious at spiraling corruption and vio-
lence, Mexican voters unleashed a political earthquake Sunday
by electing a leftist firebrand as president and giving him a broad
mandate to overthrow the political establishment and govern for
the poor.
A late-night official quick count from electoral authorities
forecast that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador would win with
between 53 percent and 53.8 percent of the vote, a remarkable
margin not seen in the country for many years. A prominent exit
poll predicted that his party allies were poised to score huge wins
in the Senate and lower house, possibly absolute majorities in
both.
Lopez Obrador, who campaigned on vows to transform Mex-
ico and oust the “mafia of power” ruling the country, rode wide-
spread voter anger and discontent with the governing Institu-
tional Revolution Party, or PRI, of President Enrique Pena Nieto
and had led opinion polls since the beginning of the campaign.
The PRI, which dominated Mexican politics for nearly
the entire 20th century and recaptured the presidency in 2012,
was set to suffer heavy losses not just for the presidency but in
down-ballot races as well.
Lopez Obrador called for reconciliation after a polarizing
campaign and promised profound change that respects the law
and constitutional order.
President Donald Trump tweeted congratulations: “I look
very much forward to working with him. There is much to be
done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!”

WASHINGTON — The Senate’s top Democrat tried today to
rally public opposition to any Supreme Court pick by President
Donald Trump who’d oppose abortion rights, issuing a striking
campaign season call to action for voters to prevent such a nomi-
nee by putting “pressure on the Senate.”
With Trump saying he’ll pick from a list of 25 potential nom-
inees he’s compiled with guidance from conservatives, Sen-
ate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said any of them would be
“virtually certain” to favor overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973
case that affirmed women’s right to abortion. They would also be
“very likely” to back weakening President Barack Obama’s 2010
law that expanded health care coverage to millions of Americans,
he said.
Schumer said that while Democrats don’t control the Senate
— Republicans have a 51-49 edge — most senators back abor-
tion rights. In an unusually direct appeal to voters, he said that to
block “an ideological nominee,” people should “tell your sena-
tors” to oppose anyone from Trump’s list.
Trump has said he is focusing on up to seven potential candi-
dates, including two women, to fill the vacancy of retiring Justice
Anthony Kennedy, a swing vote on the nine-member court. He’s
said he’ll announce his pick July 9.
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Sunday she would oppose
any nominee she believed would overturn Roe v. Wade, and
would only back a judge who would show respect for settled
law such as the Roe decision, which has long been anathema to
conservatives.
Trump spent the weekend at his New Jersey golf club con-
ferring with his advisers, including White House counsel Don
McGahn, as he considers his options to fill the vacancy that might
make precedent-shattering court decisions on abortion, health
care, gay marriage and other issues.
Thai rescuers locate missing
boys and coach alive in cave
MAE SAI, Thailand — Rescuers located 12 boys and
their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave
in northern Thailand late today, more than a week after they
went missing, bringing hope in a desperate search that has
attracted international help and captivated the nation.
Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said
the 13 were in the process of being rescued, but he cautioned
that they were not out of peril yet.
“We found them safe. But the operation isn’t over,” he
said in comments broadcast nationwide.
Rescue divers had spent much of today making prepara-
tions for a final push to locate the lost soccer players, aged 11
to 16, and their 25-year-old coach. They disappeared when
flooding trapped them after entering the Tham Luang Nang
Non cave on June 23.
Thai navy SEAL divers and rescue workers from other
countries made initial progress through the narrow passage-
way early today after passing through a key chamber on
Sunday whose high, murky waters had previously blocked
their progress.
Divers have been stymied repeatedly by rising water
that has filled sections of the cave and forced them to with-
draw for safety reasons. When water levels dropped Sunday,
the divers went forward with a more methodical approach,
deploying a rope line and extra oxygen supplies along the
way.
Experts in cave rescues from around the world continued
to gather at the site. An official Australian group has now
followed a U.S. military team, British cave experts, Chinese
lifesaving responders and other volunteer groups from sev-
eral countries.

PARIS — A notorious French criminal serving 25 years for
murder made an audacious escape from prison Sunday after sev-
eral heavily armed men landed a helicopter in a courtyard, freed
him from a visiting room and carried him away.
It was the second daring escape by Redoine Faid, who once
blasted his way out of a different prison with explosives hidden
in tissue packs.
His latest escape, from Reau Prison, took only “a few min-
utes,” France’s Justice Ministry said. Unarmed guards said they
could do nothing to prevent it.
Dressed all in black, two men wearing balaclavas and police
armbands got off the chopper and entered the prison to look for
Faid. They used a grinding machine to open the door to the vis-
iting room. The men set off smoke canisters to hide from video
cameras, and the helicopter touched down in the only part of the
complex that was not covered by anti-helicopter netting.
When the chopper arrived, Faid was meeting with his brother
in the visiting room. A third man was holding the pilot at gunpoint.
French media reported that the three men took the pilot hos-
tage at a flying club in the Paris region. He was later released with
no physical injuries.
The helicopter was found burned in the town of Garges-les-Go-
nesse, in the northern suburbs of Paris. Faid was believed to have
left by car along with his accomplices.
The 46-year-old Faid was serving time for the 2010 death of a
young police officer killed during a botched robbery. In the 1990s,
he led a gang involved in robbing banks and armored vans.

An American-born citizen who federal authorities say recently
scouted locations in Cleveland to attack people watching Fourth
of July fireworks and talked of carrying out additional bombings
has been charged with trying to support terrorism.
Federal authorities said today that Demetrius Pitts, 48, had
repeatedly expressed his support for al-Qaida for more than a
year and talked about setting off bombs at a July 4 parade and
later in his hometown of Philadelphia.
Pitts, of Maple Heights, was due in federal court today in
Cleveland. He was arrested Sunday after meeting an under-
cover agent and charged with attempted support of a terrorist
organization.
FBI Special Agent Stephen Anthony said it was not clear how
close Pitts was to carrying out his threats, but he said authorities
couldn’t sit back and wait to find out.
Authorities first began watching Pitts in 2017, after he made
Facebook posts threatening violence against the U.S., Anthony said.
He later began meeting with an undercover agent and dis-
cussed several different ways to carry out an attack, according
to court documents. Pitts also talked about his hatred for the U.S.
military, Anthony said.
An undercover agent in late June gave Pitts a bus pass and cell-
phone that he thought were from al-Qaida supporters so that he could
go downtown and look for locations to carry out his attacks. He shot
videos of potential targets such as a federal building and U.S. Coast
Guard station and then turned over the phone last week, believing
the photos and videos would be given to al-Qaida members.
