Model: Ultimate goal is to

Contest: ‘To me, this means family’

But the Jessop’s success
at competitive sand sculpt-
ing is rooted in a humble
beginning.
“I just wanted something
to do with my kids when they
were little,” Yvonne Jessop
said.
As the mother of five, Jes-
sop found the contest on the
internet and decided to sign
the family up.
“I remember thinking,
‘We can build a sandcastle,’”
she said, “meanwhile hav-
ing no idea – none at all – of
what these kind of sandcas-
tles looked like.”
In their first year compet-
ing in the large group divi-
sion, the family was floored
by what they saw from
other teams. So they trained,
bought books, studied the
tools other teams used and
eventually geared up to com-
pete in the Masters Division
three years later.
The day of competition
was 42 degrees and rain-
ing, causing everything
they made to slump and
melt. Their spirits, however,
remained unaffected.
“I didn’t know if my kids
would ever want to try that
again,” Jessop said. “But
when we got back to camp,
they said, ‘What are we
going to make next year?’”
And the kids — now
mostly in their 20s — have
kept asking that question
as they each have made an
annual pilgrimage to Cannon
Beach to compete.
Jonathan Jessop, who
started building at 14, is now
25 and flies in from Hawaii
each year for the contest.
“To me, this means fam-
ily. It’s not about winning,
it’s about the fun,” Jona-
than Jessop said. “It’s defi-

nitely not for the warm sunny
beaches. Hawaii has plenty
of those.”
As the kids have grown, so
has the team as new in-laws
and girlfriends are roped into
the family tradition. No mat-
ter how they place, Yvonne
Jessop said after nine years
of competition the family has
received something greater.

us work together better than
anything else. Like any
team, there’s conflict. But

made the all-league second

One upsetting aspect of gradu-
ating early is she can no longer
play for the school, she said.
Rethati earned 12 dual high
school and college credits
through the academy and plans
to continue her studies at Clat-
sop Community College. She
will then transfer to a univer-
sity to study clinical psychol-
ogy, an interest she said was
born of her own experiences
studying independently.
“I’ve always been inter-
ested in psychology, because
of the whole accelerated learn-
ing thing,” she said. “I started
thinking about it at 14. Why
am I ahead (in) grades? Why
are these other kids smart and
not doing the same thing?”

in the end, it’s good,” she
said. “It’s really changed the
dynamic of the family. As
the kids have grown, we’ve
learned how to communi-
cate and solve problems dif-
ferently than we would have
otherwise.”
Rethati credits her mother,
Beverly Nelson, for keep-
ing her on track. Her brother,
Zack, 12, is also involved with
the online school and recently
tested into the ninth grade.
Although she opted to learn
online, Rethati has remained
involved with the Knappa
School District, playing soft-
ball in every grade except
sixth. She is also a counselor at
Camp Kiwanilong, volunteers
during skate nights at the Asto-
ria Armory and likes to photo-
graph concerts.
Rethati made the Knappa
High School’s varsity soft-
ball team at 13, when she was
already 5 feet 8 inches. She
was a designated hitter and

“After a certain point, your
return on investment might
not be to fix more bridges, but
take those resources and put it
toward a vertical evacuation
structure,” Cox said. “It might
not even be infrastructure. You
could possibly use resources in
more education, et cetera.”
The integrity of Seaside’s
bridges during a seismic event
is not a new concern. In 2015,
Transportation for America, a
Washington, D.C.-based infra-
structure advocacy group,
found seven of 10 bridges in
Seaside were “structurally
deficient.”
But the conversation has
mostly focused around struc-
tural deficiencies rather than
population distribution, and the
timing of the new study could
possibly influence the out-
come of a work session sched-
uled in July centered around
designing a strategy for bridge
replacement.
City Councilor Tom Horn-
ing, a geologist who will lead
the discussion, has been an
advocate for replacing bridges
at Avenue U and Avenue G in
particular. He wants to make
sure areas on the south end of
town with evacuation times
estimated at 35 minutes will
have a reliable and quick way
out to high ground.
But his ultimate goal is to
persuade the city to develop a
plan that retrofits every bridge.
“Seaside, because of geo-
graphic layout and rivers, is one
of the most challenging com-
munities on the coast,” Horning
said, in reference to evacuating
in a tsunami. “There’s a strat-
egy in focusing on population
concentrations and prioritizing
based on that. But every bridge
needs to be done. We don’t want
to find ourselves in a Hurricane
Katrina situation, where we
knew there was something that
could be done but didn’t do it.”
Cox and Wang empha-
sized their research — funded
by the Oregon Sea Grant and
the National Science Founda-
tion — is not an end-all solu-
tion for tsunami preparations in
Seaside.
The two are working on a
new study on the most effec-
tive locations for vertical evac-
uation structures in Seaside, of
which there are many, prelimi-
nary research shows. They are
also working on new simula-
tions that account for a tourist
population who may not know
the most efficient route to high
ground, different weather con-
ditions and different times of
day — all factors that change
human behavior and could pro-
vide new recommendations.
“A lot of decisions have eco-
nomic and social factors. We’re
just trying to do a piece of the
puzzle,” Cox said.
