They raised families, developed professional careers, put others’ needs and interests before their own — the old familiar story. Now both are making up for lost time with their artwork. Bosse’ paints in oils, acrylic and watercolor. She has devel- oped several styles, and her sub- jects reflect her life on the East Coast near the Atlantic Ocean. Recently, she has been painting in watercolor and her love of the sea and nature are reflected in her paintings. Hern also paints in oils and acrylic. Watercolor is her medi- um of choice. She paints various subjects, and her sense of humor and whimsy lead to creations guaranteed to tickle your funny bone. The Art Loft is privileged to present the paintings of these two artists. They represent ongo- ing learning after retirement, the pursuit of dreams and the dis- covery of talent that is revealed with study and perseverance. Their artwork is notable, their energy and passion inspiring. The natural beauty of the North Coast and Gibson’s travels throughout the world inspire this artist. Nature and man-made structures are subjects for his photogra- phy and videos. A native Oregonian, Gibson was the staff photographer for his high school and college newspapers. After college and as part of his work, he traveled extensively and took photographs everywhere he went. Before the advent of digital photog- raphy, he developed and printed photos in his dark room. After many years as a self-employed web developer, Gibson and his wife retired to Astoria. He continues to indulge his passion for photography and share his talents with others. Enjoy Gibson’s work at the Art Loft, 106 Third St. in Astoria, throughout the month. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment. Painting workshop inspired by Ikebana MANZANITA — The Hoff- man Center for the Arts will host a two-day work- shop, “Painting Watercolor Florals: Inspired by the Japanese Art of Ikebana.” The workshop will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17. Tuition is $100. This workshop is designed for adults 18 and older. Some drawing skills are preferred, but not necessary. Students must bring materials from the list that can be found on the Hoffman Center’s blog post for this class at hoffmanarts. org/events/watercolor-flo- rals/ Led by artist Carolyn Gates of Eugene, this class will use live Ikebana ar- rangements as subjects. Ikebana (literally translated) means “flowers kept alive.” Arrangements appear simple yet natural. But they are complex and involve a symmetry of care- fully planned relationships. Students will learn more about composition and creating form when painting still life from traditional Japanese Ikebana arrange- ments. Training the eye to see the complexity and simplicity of the Ikebana arrangements will enhance the skills of beginning to advanced watercolor painters. Gates currently teaches watercolor at Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene. She has won numerous commis- sions to paint in watercolor and colored pencil and has had several shows in Oregon. Gates is a member of the Watercolor Society of Ore- gon. For more information and to view her work, visit her website, cgates.com. COURTESY CAROLYN GATES ‘Ikebana Inspiration’ by Carolyn Gates
