ing Warrenton Football Camp,
May 29 to June 1 at Warrenton
High School.
The camp runs each day
from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Cost is
$40 prior to May 15, $50 after.

Coast Baseball Camp will take
place June 18-21 at Astoria’s
CMH Field.
Players should arrive at
least 15 minutes early for reg-
istration on the first day. For
players age 13-16, the camp
is 9:30 a.m. to noon each day,
and 1-3 p.m. for players age
10-12 (ages refer to how old
player will be next year).
Cost
is
$100, or two
kids for $170,
and
three
kids $210.

coach and all-time winningest
coach in Oregon high school
baseball history, runs the
camp along with other Astoria
coaches, alumni and current
varsity players.
The camp is designed to

and knowledge in all parts of

head coach of the top-
ranked South Medford High
School baseball team has been
placed on leave because he
consumed alcohol before a
game.
In his ninth season as head
coach, Ray Smith has guided
the Panthers to the South-
west Conference champion-
ship and No. 1 spot in the
Class 6A power rankings as of
Wednesday.
The Mail Tribune reports
Smith admitted having drinks
before Tuesday’s game, a con-
test from which he was ejected
after arguing a call at third
base.
Smith says he “messed up
big time” and let a lot of peo-
ple down.
The school district says
the duration of the leave
will depend on the outcome
of an investigation by its
human resources department.

James Paxton, welcoming
visitors to the coastal com-
munity south of Vancouver.
The sign’s main feature is
a heron, and locals occasion-
ally dress the bird up for big
events, such as Canada Day
or a Canucks playoff game.
Late Tuesday night, the
heron was clad in a Seattle
Mariners jersey with Pax-
ton’s name and number 65
on the back, honoring the
lefty’s no-hitter against the
Toronto Blue Jays. A Cana-
dian flag was stuck in the
bird’s mouth, and hand-let-
tered signs were taped up
reading “Congrats James”
and “Big Maple with a
no-hitter,” a reference to
Paxton’s nickname, and the
large maple leaf tattoo on his
Blue Jays beat Mariners 5-2

TORONTO — After being held hitless by Seat-
tle’s James Paxton on Tuesday, the Toronto Blue
Jays were looking to get their offense clicking again.
It came alive in a pivotal eighth-inning rally.

the eighth and Justin Smoak followed with a go-
ahead double as the Blue Jays rallied to beat the
Mariners 5-2 on Wednesday night.

“Some friends did it last
night and they sent me a
picture of it,” Paxton said
Wednesday. “That was
really cool to see. The sup-
port I have back home is
really special. It’s just so
great of them to think to do
something like that.”
Paxton became the sec-
ond Canadian to throw a
no-hitter, and the first to do
it north of the border, with
Tuesday’s 5-0 win over
the Blue Jays. The official
Twitter account of Canada
tweeted congratulations to
him.
That the game was in
Canada meant it aired on
television in his hometown,
which meant a lot to the six-
year veteran.
“It was definitely spe-
cial to do in Canada,” Pax-
ton said. “Having talked to
all the people I’ve talked to
since the game, just the abil-
ity they had to watch the
game because it was in Can-
ada, was really special.
“Everyone was watch-
ing,” he added. “I got all
kinds of text messages and
videos of people watching
the last out and stuff.”
