Coastal Oregon Artist Residency open for submissions
Astoria Visual Arts (AVA)
and Recology Western
Oregon (RWO) are pleased
to announce the third round
of the Coastal Oregon Artist
Residency, which aims to
support the creation of art
from recycled, repurposed
and discarded materials
recovered from the Recology
Astoria Recycling Depot and
Transfer Station.
The deadline to submit
application materials is Sun-
day, May 27.
The residency provides
selected artists with access to
discarded materials, a stipend
of $400 per month and a
large studio space at RWO’s
Warrenton-based shop.
By supporting artists
who work with recycled
materials, AVA and Recology
hope to encourage people to
conserve natural resources
and promote new ways of
thinking about art and the
environment. Two three-
month residencies will begin
Monday, July 2, and end
Monday, Oct. 1.
During their residencies,
artists will have 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Monday through Satur-
day scavenging privileges at
the Astoria Transfer Station,
and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday access to the
Warrenton studio. Artists
are expected to work on site
regularly (approximately
20 hours per week) in order
to complete their proposed
projects by the close of the
residency.
Mid-term reviews will
take place to gauge progress
toward completion of the
artwork per the concepts set
forth in each artist’s proposal.
At the conclusion of the
residencies, AVA and RWO
will host a reception and
public exhibition for the
artists featuring artwork
made during their residen-
cies. When the residencies
end, each artist will be asked
to contribute one piece of
artwork to the program’s
permanent collection.

career-level artists living in
Clatsop and Tillamook coun-
ties in Oregon and Pacific
and Wahkiakum counties in

design, technical construction
and materials in the creation
of artwork, including precau-
tions reasonably required or
recommended by Recology
personnel.
Though participating
artists will exercise complete
control over the creative
process, and all creative ideas
and expressions will originate
from the artists, AVA and
RWO reserve the right to
reject artwork that is offensive

Our selection committee,
which is composed of arts
professionals and environ-

candidates for interviewing,
with two finalists and two
alternates ultimately selected.
The committee may contact
artists in advance of or during
the June 3 meeting to address
any questions or need for
clarification.
Currently, the committee
awards two residencies per
year. The committee will eval-
uate submissions based on the
artists’ demonstrated com-
mitment to resource conser-
vation and recycling through
art, how the residency can
provide the artist with profes-
sional growth, the quality of
previous work and the artist’s
reputation and references. The
committee also considers the
artist’s use of materials and
the types of tools available in
the studio.
