Gray: New business manager for
historical society is an extrovert
Continued from Page 1A

Emily Gray describes herself as an extrovert who is also ‘giddy and
happy to be in an Excel spreadsheet.’
for my kids to be near their grandpar-
ents,” she said. “I love the sense of
community. You find so many unique
people together. I don’t think I’ve
found that anywhere else I’ve been.”
She earned an associate degree in
applied sciences at the college and
then an accounting degree online at
Eastern Oregon University. Upon
graduation from the community col-
lege in 2010, she earned the outstand-
ing business student award.
Academic success appears to run
in the family. Her oldest son, Enoch,
recently graduated from Oregon State
University at 19 years old. He earned
a bachelor’s degree in economics and
a minor in actuarial sciences.
With her education finalized and
family entrenched in the community,
Gray made the move to the nonprofit
historical society, which she believes
offers her a chance to maximize both
her skills and personality.
“I love what they stand for and
what they’re doing in the community,
and I wanted to be a part of that,”
Gray said. “I love accounting and I
knew that would be a part of it. I’m
an extrovert and I love being around
people.”
Art: Oregon Coast Visitor
Center launches project
Continued from Page 1A
“The goal of this project is to
help residents and visitors connect
with artists, gain a deeper sense of
place, and improve artists’ liveli-
hoods,” said Marcus Hinz, the visi-
tors association’s executive director.
Part of the inspiration came
from a desire to connect and ele-
vate the work artists have long been
doing on the coast into one cohe-
sive guide. Kevan Ridgway, the
chairman of the marketing commit-
tee at the Cannon Beach Chamber
of Commerce, is using this year to
gather any documentation he can
find about coastal artists and taking
community suggestions about what
should be featured on the trail.
There are only 10 cities along
the coast without any form of pub-
lic art. An objective for this project
is to work on ways to find funding
to introduce art into these commu-
nities. One of the ways Ridgway
plans to do this is by partnering with
the environmental cleanup group
SOLVE, which would contrib-
ute materials for marine debris-re-
lated art to make the endeavor more
cost-effective for the artists and the
towns.
“Public art is a form of com-
munity expression,” Ridgway said.
“So for visitors, public art is a great
way to learn about a place. Hope-
fully the Oregon Coast Art Trail will
entice patrons of the arts to wander
into local galleries, inquire about
local theater performances, or plan
a future visit to explore more of the
art trail.”
While the ultimate goal is to
encourage visitors to visit the area in
the fall, spring and winter months,
Ridgway believes it will contribute
just as much for the residents of the
coast, he said.
“This will connect visitors and
residents with artists,” Ridgway
said. “We don’t want to do some-
thing that doesn’t add value for the
residents.”

said J.P. Jenkins, “let’s get the elk
back in the woods. Let’s chase them
out.”
Many elk come into the valleys
and Clatsop Plains because the terri-
tory provides the best foraging, Bie-
derbeck said. Past attempts at steril-
ization and relocation have proven
ineffective.
Immediate safety issues involving
elk are worthy of a 911 call, Pierce
said. Police have removed and in
some cases euthanized some problem
elk. Balensifer also called on people
to report others who are feeding elk
to the police.
For preventing property damage,
Biederbeck recommended fencing
and a wide range of plants elk don’t
eat. But to improve public safety
requires changing human behavior,
he said.
Balensifer will take feedback
from the town hall to the Warrenton
City Commission for a robust con-
versation about elk and human inter-
action, he said.

for help to reduce population lev-
els, a strategy that could also be used
against elk. But Thursday’s town hall
was more about living with the elk.
Herman Biederbeck, biologist
with the state Department of Fish
and Wildlife, said the elk popula-
tion is recovering from past hunting.
There are about 6,000 in the Saddle
Mountain Wildlife Management Unit
covering most of Clatsop County,
he said, including about 125 around
Warrenton and more than 300 on the
Clatsop Plains west of U.S. Highway
101.
About 400 bulls are taken each
year from permitted hunting, he said,
and the state has a goal of increasing
the population to about 7,800 in the
management unit.
Pierce and Oregon State Police
Sgt. Joe Warwick reminded people of
the importance of staying clear of elk
and not feeding them. Feeding famil-
iarizes the animals to humans and
can lead to aggressive behavior. War-
renton has passed a no-feeding ordi-
nance. Biederbeck has recommended
a similar ordinance in Gearhart.
“Nearly all the feeding issues
(in Warrenton) come from locals,”
Pierce said.
The police are also trying to dis-
courage people from blocking traffic
to stop and take pictures of elk.
Residents have complained of
feeling helpless in the face of herds
that damage property and sometimes
trap them.
“I have them in my yard con-
stantly,” said Dixie Black, adding
they have probably eaten thousands
of dollars worth of plants.
North Coast Christian School
teacher Kirstin Salmi said she often
has to use a megaphone to scare away
elk hanging out in the playground
and endangering children. She has a
hazing permit to scare elk, but said
she needs more training in how best
to frighten them.
While everyone enjoys seeing elk,
