In Game 2, she had three doubles and a home run, driving in three more runs. at the plate. A bunt was attempted off Seaside pitcher Pay- ton Westerholm, who made a diving catch near the first base line. Westerholm fired the ball to Ashton Boyd at first for the second out, and Boyd delivered it to Gage McFad- den at second to complete the 1-3-6 triple play. The three players also combined for three hits and four runs scored in the 7-4 win. Roscoe takes over coaching duties By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The Astoria boys golf team is under new manage- ment. Peter Roscoe takes over for Kevin Goin, and Roscoe is hoping to cook up an eventual winner for the Fishermen. For the time being, it’s a young group. Of the five golfers who competed for Astoria in last year’s regional tournament, only two return. So it’s largely a new-look team on the course. Still, “There’s potential there,” said Roscoe, who Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian Josh Olson and the Astoria boys golf team will be com- peting in Class 4A’s tough- est district. served as an assistant coach for Astoria a few years back. “We’ve got some good young players. Like it is with most high school golf- ers, we’ll be working a lot on their short game. That’s always such a big factor at this level.” Kirk Fausett and Brian Wilder were Astoria’s top two finishers in last year’s regional tournament, and both were seniors. On the other hand, Taylor Palmberg had Astoria’s best score in the league tourna- ment, and he returns for his junior season, as does Josh Olson. Other returners with var- sity experience are sopho- more Dylan Altheide-Niel- sen and junior Conner Long. The list of newcomers includes some promising talent in Jake Ficken, Tryon Matlock, sophomore Aaron Rickenbach and junior Mar- cus Soderstrom, along with Daniel Paswarck, a German foreign exchange student. Of course, getting any- where in Special District 1 will be tough. For a remark- able five years in a row, the 4A state champion has come from Astoria’s district (Sea- side in 2014 and ‘15, Crook County in 2016, Scappoose in 2017). Contending state favorites this year include Seaside and Valley Catholic. HILLSBORO — Play- ers from Astoria and Seaside were on the course Tuesday, as Valley Catholic hosted a Cowapa League girls golf invitational at Meriwether Golf Course in Hillsboro. Using a modified Stable- ford scoring system, Valley Catholic scored the team vic- tory with 145 points, followed by Scappoose (124) and Asto- ria (121), with Seaside (60) a distant fourth. Tillamook’s team was incomplete. Valley Catholic’s Caro- line Hobson was the individ- ual champion with 51 points, edging Astoria’s Samantha Hemsley by just one point. Players earned points based on their individual hole score in relation to par. Hems- ley finished with a personal best 94 stroke score, while Astoria teammate Jenna Tra- vers tied for fourth with 42 points and a 102 stroke score. Hemsley also had the only birdie by any player, on the par five 18th hole. Tristyn McFadden and Caitlin Hillman each had 20 points to lead Seaside. Other Astoria scores were Sarah Lertora (16 points), Gracie Cummings (13 points) and Sierra Adams (12 points). Constance Rouda, Annal- yse Steele, Emilie Bonacina, Kaitlyn Boutin, Xochitl Perez and Yaein Kim also participated. Sydney Rapp (17 points) and Madi Grimm (3) also competed for the Gulls. Astoria’s next match will be April 12 at Quail Valley, in a tournament hosted by Scappoose. Dayton defeats Warrenton, 10-0 The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — The Warrenton Warriors hosted a Class 3A softball power Wednesday afternoon. And although it was close for a while, the softball power left with a victory, as Dayton scored a 10-0 win over War- renton in a nonleague game. The Pirates — who have played in the last three state championship games (win- ning in 2015) — had a much tougher time against the War- riors than the final score indicates. Dayton was clinging to a 2-0 lead through four complete innings, before scoring four runs in the top of the fifth. The Pirates added four more in the sixth, then held the Warriors scoreless for the 10-run, mercy rule victory. Dayton scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, then added a run in the third. Meanwhile, Warrenton was having a tough time against Pirates pitcher Anika Heidt, who gave up just four hits, with 11 strikeouts and three walks. The Warriors ended up stranding all seven of their baserunners. Warrenton pitcher Niqui Blodgett struck out two and walked four, while Dayton col- lected 12 hits. Heidt helped her cause by going 3-for-3 with two dou- bles and driving in three runs. Dayton’s Malina Ray and Katie Jacks scored three runs apiece, as the No. 3-ranked Pirates improved their over- all record to 7-5. Four of Day- ton’s losses came in nonleague games on a recent road trip to California. Warrenton (3-5) hosts a nonleague game Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Knappa, before beginning league play next week vs. Rainier.
