Scappoose
over Astoria
Seaside
downs Valley
Catholic, 7-5
The Daily Astorian
BEAVERTON — Seaside
softball is off to a 1-0 start in
league play, following a 7-5 win
Tuesday at Valley Catholic.
Senior pitcher Jetta Ideue
struck out 12 batters, and the
Gulls had plenty of offense.
Freshman Kandice Flaigg
had two singles, drew a walk
and reached on an illegal pitch.
Teammate Sequoia Shand
walked and tripled, and scored
Seaside’s final run.
Sidney Owsley was 2-for-3
offensively and threw a runner
out from behind the plate. Gra-
cie Rhodes had a single and a
double for Seaside, now 6-1
overall.
The Gulls host Valley Cath-
olic for a single game Thursday.
Astoria’s 2018 league
opener did not go quite as
planned Tuesday.
It was a close game through
three innings, before Scap-
poose scored seven runs in the
top of the fourth for an even-
tual 12-1, five-inning win
over the Fishermen. The Indi-
ans collected 14 hits off three
Astoria pitchers in the Cowapa
League opener at Tapiola Park.
Meanwhile,
Scappoose
senior starter J.C. Gross scat-
tered four hits, struck out six
and walked five to pick up the
complete-game win.
The top half of the Scap-
poose order had 11 hits, with
doubles by Jerad Toman,
Gross and sophomore Logan
Travis, who was 4-for-4 and
drove in five runs.
Josiah Hirsch scored the
lone Astoria run in the bottom
of the fourth, on an RBI single
by Jalmer Johnson.
Valiants defeat
Seaside on the
diamond, 4-3
The Daily Astorian
BEAVERTON — Meet-
ing for the first time since their
championship game on the
basketball court, Valley Cath-
olic gained a slight measure of
revenge Tuesday on the base-
ball diamond.
Seaside out-hit the Valiants,
but Valley Catholic outscored
the Gulls, 4-3, in the Cow-
apa League season opener in
Beaverton.
All seven runs were scored
in the first three innings, which
included a 2-2 tie after the first.
Valley Catholic starter Wil-
liam Schultheis got the win,
but it was Valiant reliever Por-
ter Agnew who held the Gulls
scoreless over the final four
innings to earn the save.
Leadoff
batter
Gage
McFadden had three of Sea-
side’s six hits, while Duncan
Thompson had a double and
drove in three runs.
On the mound, Thompson
and Payton Westerholm held
the Valiants to just four hits,
which included a pair of dou-
bles for Agnew.
The Daily Astorian
Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian
Jackson Kunde had an eagle on the second hole and narrowly missed another on the third.

time we did that was in the 2015 state
tournament. We did a better job today
of limiting our ‘blow-up’ holes.
“For some reason we struggled on
No. 9 today, shooting two triples and
two double bogeys, but otherwise
we did a pretty good job of limiting
damage.”
He added, “I think we had one other
triple and maybe a handful of doubles
from the other 85 holes we played.
Other than Jackson’s eagle, nobody did
anything spectacular. We just played
solid golf.”
The Gulls will have a better idea of
where they stand among the top teams
in the state when they travel Friday to
the “Raven Rumble” at Eagle Crest
Ridge Resort.
