school project, Vosika encoun-
tered his former teacher at a
wedding. After catching up,
Vasalicia showed Vosika a
pocket knife she had kept
for years and asked if it was
his. Vosika, an admitted trou-
blemaker in his childhood,
believed the knife was confis-
cated from another student after
he made markings on the post.
“When we were little guys,
we all had pocket knives,”
Vosika said.
The kids who use the grassy
field today are more likely to
play with smartphones than
pocket knives. The elemen-
tary school was closed within
a couple of years after the proj-
ect, and some trees surround-
ing the school were cut down.
But for some reason, the
tiny, dilapidated post has
endured.
“The fir trees are gone. The
school is gone. The post is still
there,” Ziak said. “Now that
people know about it, they’ll
probably come take it down.”

pamphlet provides a piece of
information “that all the vot-
ers have that’s the same.”
It could cost the county
up to $30,000 some years to
print the pamphlets, depend-
ing on what’s on the ballot,
according to County Man-
ager Cameron Moore.
“That would be a pretty
robust election,” he said.
He expects most years
the cost would be signifi-
cantly less, but the high num-
ber gives the county room to
cover the costs of submitting
information for smaller spe-
cial districts that may not be
able to afford the fees. Some
of these districts had told the
county they would not be
able to participate in a voters’
pamphlet because of the costs
and paperwork involved.

bered election years.
The funds to provide
for voters’ pamphlets will
be included in the county’s
upcoming budget. The first
pamphlet will go out for the
2019 elections.
Port: Environmental center ‘an uphill climb’

tive director of the task force,
said such a center would be an
ideal location to consolidate
her group’s operations, cur-
rently spread out over multi-
ple locations.
“I think it’s a really excit-
ing opportunity for the Port
and for CREST and for the
other entities doing work
around the environment and
natural resources for Clatsop
County,” she said.
The college is prepar-
ing to acquire from the state
the land under the Marine
and Environmental Research
and Training Station, a
career-technical campus at
South Tongue Point. Colum-
bia Land Trust is close to
acquiring 90 acres of wet-
lands south of the campus.
The land would be restored
into fish and wildlife habi-
tat and transferred to the col-
lege for use as a field learn-
ing space.
The college is also creat-
ing a master plan for the South
Tongue Point campus, along
with a likely capital cam-
paign to improve and expand
the buildings. While the col-
lege will likely expand square
footage at South Tongue
Point, that space will be eaten
up by existing programs.
“We’d look at the center
at the airport for an environ-
mental sciences program,”
College President Christo-
pher Breitmeyer said. “I think
it would be great for the area
if it moves forward.”
