Representatives from Astoria Middle School were among the 24 schools that received grants totaling $110,000 from Wells Fargo and the Trail Blazers Foundation. Astoria Middle School receives grant from Blazers, Wells Fargo Astoria Middle School received the largest grant, $9,500, which will be used to update and repair the basket- ball hoops and backboards for its gyms. The other 23 grants ranged from $500 to $7,500, based on the scope and costs asso- ciated with the project or pro- gram seeking funds. The Trail Blazers Founda- tion and Wells Fargo awarded $110,000 in grants benefiting hundreds of high risk and low- and moderate-income students at 24 schools in 19 rural and urban cities across Oregon and Southwest Washington. Goin helped secure the grant. Through their fourth annual “Take It To the Court for Education” program, the Trail Blazers Foundation and Wells Fargo distributed the grant checks during a special reception during the Detroit vs. Portland basketball game. Gohr was on hand at the game to accept the check for Astoria Middle School. Teachers, school staff, administrators, parents and community members had sub- mitted more than 300 applica- tions in pursuit of grants for their local schools. A com- mittee of community lead- ers managed the review pro- cess to determine this year’s winners. “This is the culmina- tion of an important part- nership that has allowed the Trail Blazers Foundation and Wells Fargo to channel much- needed dollars directly into schools and classrooms,” said Trail Blazers and Rose Quar- ter President & CEO Chris McGowan. Baseball: Astoria blanks Yamhill-Carlton, 10-0 The Daily Astorian Astoria scored nine runs in the first inning on its way to an easy 10-0 win over Yam- hill-Carlton in a nonleague baseball game Monday after- noon at CMH Field, on Day 1 of Astoria’s spring break tournament. Pitcher Colby Junes tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out three Tigers with one walk. He needed just 50 pitches to com- plete the five-inning contest. Trey Hageman led Astoria’s 10-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Leadoff batter Dylan Rush was 2-for-2 and scored twice, and Ephraim Tice added a double. Tournament action con- tinues today at 10 a.m. when the Fishermen play South Umpqua. Astoria hosts a non- league game Wednesday with Naselle. After struggling to score runs in their first five games, Astoria softball players crossed the plate 15 times Monday morning in a first- round game of the Seaside Spring Break tournament. Astoria defeated Regis 15-5 in a game that was played at Astoria’s CMH Field. The remainder of the tournament will be played today at Seaside’s Broadway Field, where the Lady Fish- ermen are scheduled to play Ilwaco at 5 p.m. The 15 runs equaled the combined total in Astoria’s first five games, as the Lady Fishermen improve to 1-5 overall. In Monday’s win, Julia Norris started in the cir- cle and struck out the side in each of the first three innings. Emma Biederman and McKailyn Rogers came on in relief, and Norris eventu- ally came back and finished. Norris also had a dou- ble at the plate, as did soph- omore Taileigh Cole in her first at-bat of the season. Irish dance back to Final Four after beating Oregon 84-74 By TIM BOOTH Associated Press SPOKANE, Wash. — Kathryn Westbeld scored 20 points, Jessica Shepard added 18 and Notre Dame reached the Final Four for the eighth time in school history by defeating Oregon 84-74 on Monday night. Westbeld came up with the biggest game of her Notre Dame career despite being slowed by an ankle injury from the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Westbeld had scored a com- bined 12 points in the pre- vious four games, but she teamed with Shepard for an inside attack that hurt the Ducks. Westbeld made 9 of 12 shots. Notre Dame (33-3) outscored Oregon 52-38 in the paint and outrebounded the Ducks 51-29 in the Spo- kane Regional final. Arike Ogunbowale added 19 points and Marina Mabrey had 15 for the Irish. Despite a handful of costly injuries along the way, the Irish are back in a familiar spot in the national semifinals. It’s the sixth Final Four for Notre Dame since 2011 and old friend UConn awaits in the semis Friday night in Columbus, Ohio. First-team all-American Sabrina Ionescu led Ore- gon (33-5) with 26 points, but the Ducks struggled offensively over the final 20 minutes.
