THE DALLES — The Seaside
boys golf team scored its first big
victory of the spring Friday, as the
Gulls beat all the big schools to fin-
ish first in The Dalles Invitational,
held at The Dalles Country Club.
Seaside — which was not even
at full strength — knocked 40
strokes off its score from last year’s
tournament to card a 359 team
score.
The Gulls finished ahead of the
host Riverhawks (369) and third-
place Pendleton (373), both 5A
schools who placed in the top five
in last year’s 5A state tournament.
Seaside was led by brothers
Jackson and Curtis Kunde, who fin-
ished tied for fifth individually with
a pair of 87s.
“This is always a great test
of golf,” said Seaside coach Jim
Poetsch, whose program won 4A
state titles in 2014 and 2015. “This
course exposes your weaknesses,
and while we were shown ours, we
had less than the other teams today.
“You look at the scores and think
we might not have played our best,
but we scored the same as Pendle-
ton did last year and they earned a
trophy at the 5A level last season.”
The supporting scores for Sea-
side came from Connor Merrell
(88) and Mason Shamion (97).
Mason Crawford (103) was Sea-
side’s fifth player, as the Gulls were
missing two-year letterman Sam-
son Sibony.
SEASIDE — The magic number
was “3” for the Seaside softball team
Friday afternoon.
Hosting a nonleague game with
Knappa at Broadway Field, the
Lady Gulls scored three runs in the
bottom of the sixth for a 3-1 win.
Seaside’s No. 3, pitcher Jetta
Ideue, struck out 13 batters and
allowed just two hits in the win,
helping the Gulls improve to 3-0
overall.
Ideue struck out the side in the
first, second and fourth innings, as
Knappa batters were having trou-
ble just making contact through five
innings.
Meanwhile, Knappa sopho-
more pitcher Madelynn Weaver was
equally strong.

tempted steal early in Friday’s game.
Weaver scattered a few hits, but
she also kept the Gulls scoreless
through five innings.
All the action was in the sixth.
In the top of the inning, Seaside
center fielder Alyssa Goin made
a diving catch off a line drive by
Weaver.
Moments later, Kaitlyn Truax
was hit by a pitch, and took third on
a passed ball.
With two outs, a grounder by
Mikayla Rethati was fielded cleanly,
but an errant throw to first allowed
Truax to score the game’s first run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Weaver
walked the bases full with no outs.
She retired the next two bat-
ters without giving up a run, but the
Gulls finally broke through, with
two runners, Viola Soprano and
Gracie Rhodes, scoring on an infield
base hit by Goin.
A line drive base hit by freshman
Kandice Flaigg brought in Sidney
Owsley, and Ideue struck out two
of the three batters she faced in the
seventh.

KEIZER — The Knappa Log-
gers continued to pound the opposi-
tion over the weekend, in their home
away from home.
The Loggers are taking part in
the Volcano Stadium Tournament,
which began Friday and ends today
in Keizer.
Knappa played Elmira on the
first day, and led the Falcons 8-0 in
the bottom of the first before the rain
hit. The game was postponed and is
scheduled to be made up today at Vol-
canoes Stadium.
Catlin Gabel and Knappa man-
aged to play a complete game Satur-
day, with the Loggers scoring an easy
16-1, five-inning win over the Class
3A Eagles.
Knappa scored six runs in the first
inning, then tacked on three in second
and three in the third, and ended the
contest with three in the fifth.
Kaleb Miller, Mason Hoover
and Colton Weirup combined on a
one-hitter, with Miller striking out
five. Weirup struck out the side in his
pitching debut.
Weirup was also 3-for-4 at the
plate, drove in four runs, and had two
doubles and two stolen bases.
Eli Takalo was 3-for-3 and Ryker
Coffey was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Knappa wrapped up the week-
end with another five-inning con-
test, an 11-1 decision over Western
Mennonite.
The Loggers held a 2-1 lead going
into the bottom of the fourth, when
they scored four runs. They added
five in the fifth.
Hoover was 2-for-3 with four
RBIs and a triple and Miller scored
three runs.
Dale Takalo pitched all five
innings, allowing four hits.
The Loggers are 5-0, and have
outscored their opponents 61-4 in
their five games, none of which has
gone past five innings.
