The Rangers had 10 hits off three Seaside pitchers, while Travis Fenton had two doubles and four runs batted in to lead the Gulls. Payton Westerholm added a pair of singles for Seaside, which had eight hits but committed six errors. Seaside softball team soars past Estacada, 19-9 SEASIDE — The Seaside soft- ball team improved to 2-0 with a 19-9 win over Estacada in a non- league game Tuesday at Broadway Field. In her first high school at-bat, Seaside freshman Kandice Flaigg belted a home run over the fence. Teammate Jetta Ideue added a two- run, inside-the-park home run and Sequoia Shand had two triples. Sophomore Emma Meyer picked up her first career win as a starting pitcher for the Gulls. — The Daily Astorian BASEBALL Matthews’ big day leads Astoria over St. Helens By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The Astoria baseball team made it a little more dramatic than they needed to, but in the end the Fishermen walked off with a victory Tuesday after- noon, 4-3 over St. Helens. Astoria’s first game of the season at Aiken Field was also the first win for first-year coach Glen Fromwiller, whose team improves to 1-3. The Lions scored twice in the top of the sev- enth to force another half-inning, but the Fisher- men answered in the bottom of the seventh with an infield single by Zac Patterson scoring Burke Mat- thews with the game-winner. It was the fifth year in a row for the now-annual preseason meeting between St. Helens and Astoria. After three straight wins by the Lions (2014, ’15 and ’16), the Fishermen have won two in a row. Both teams scored a run in the first inning, before the Fishermen tacked on an unlikely pair of runs in the fourth. St. Helens pitcher Kyle Harris struck out the first two batters he faced for two quick outs. Astoria’s Josiah Hirsch reached on an infield PREP SPORTS SCHEDULE TODAY Baseball — Warrenton at Neah-Kah- Nie, 4:30 p.m. Softball — Yamhill-Carlton at Astoria, 5 p.m. Girls golf — Seaside at Tillamook, 12:30 p.m. Boys golf — Seaside at Valley Cath- olic, 1 p.m. BASEBALL Astoria 4, St. Helens 3 St. Helens 100 000 2—3 6 4 Astoria 100 200 1—4 9 1 Harris, Binam (5) and Parks; Rush, Hageman (5) and Hillard. With a 1-2 count on No. 8 hitter Dylan Mat- teucci, the Fishermen senior poked a single to right, scoring Hirsch. Ryan Stutznegger followed with a slow roller to second, which the Lions booted for another error, allowing Kolee to score for a 3-1 lead. EQUESTRIAN Astoria athletes back in the saddle again The Daily Astorian SCOREBOARD Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian Burke Matthews gets ready to round third on his way home for Astoria after an errant throw by the infield. Meanwhile, the Fishermen were cruising along defensively. After St. Helens freshman Jacobi Allen opened the top of the third with a single, Astoria pitchers Dylan Rush and Trey Hageman combined on the mound to retire 12 straight. The Lions entered the seventh inning with their No. 7, 8 and 9 hitters, but still managed to tie the game. With runners at first and second and two outs, Justin Olson drove a long single to right center field, scoring both runs for a 3-3 tie. The Fishermen bounced right back in the bottom of the seventh. Matthews belted his third double of the game to left field, then advanced to third when the Lions booted a grounder by Hageman for their fourth error of the day. Patterson followed with a grounder to the mound, but an errant throw to second spoiled the potential double play, allowing Matthews to trot home with the game-winning run. Rush and Hageman scattered six hits with a combined nine strikeouts and two walks, while Astoria had nine hits. The Oregon High School Equestrian Team from Astoria High School is preparing for its biggest meet of the year, as the girls and their horses head for McMinnville next month in hopes of qualifying for the state meet. The team has three new ath- letes this year, said Brittany Israel, who serves as the coach. Astoria sophomore Ange- lina Linares and freshmen Kelsey Fausett and Elle Espelien join returner Rahlie Osburn. Linares, with her horse “Ohso,” shows only in perfor- mance while Osburn shows both in performance and gam- ing with her three horses, “Style,” “Miley” and “Luke.” Fausett (with “Piper”) and Espelien (with “Mojo”) compete in gaming only with their horses. “It has been a great season so far. Our first meet we finished strong, while our second meet we pushed ourselves and came out short. I am proud of all the girls with their hard work,” Israel said. The team’s next meet is April 12-15 in McMinnville, which will determine qualifiers for the state meet in May. At their first meet in Febru- ary, Espelien took fourth (out of 53 competitors) in the Individ- ual Flags category, and Linares placed sixth in Western. Osburn was 12th and Fausett took 19th in Barrels. In the Two-Man Birangle, Fausett and Osburn placed fourth. Osburn added a 10th place fin- ish in Figure 8 competition and a fourth place showing in Steer Daubing. In a meet earlier this month, Fausett was third in Steer Daub- ing, with Osburn seventh. Espelien added a 10th-place finish in Keyhole. Osburn was 12th in both Hunt Seat Equitation and Figure 8, and Linares took 12th in Western. Knappa also has an OHSET team, with riders Andrina Andrade, Madison Johanson, McKenzie Johanson, Haylee Skipper, Kourtney Tischer and Sierra Weirup. SOFTBALL Cascade holds off Astoria The Daily Astorian Brittany Israel/For The Daily Astorian Astoria OHSET riders Elle Espelien, left, and Kelsey Fausett. SCHEDULE TURNER — Astoria scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Cascade followed with four in the bottom of the first on its way to a 10-5 win over the Lady Fisher- men in a nonleague softball game Tuesday. Astoria’s McKailyn Rogers was 2-for-3 with a double, but the Fishermen were missing the big hits in the road contest, as they stranded nine baserunners on the day. Cascade had nine hits and drew four walks, helping the Cougars pick up their first victory, while Astoria falls to 0-4. The Lady Fishermen host a game today at CMH Field vs. Yamhill-Carlton, which will be playing its first game of the season.
