Rock on! HRAP reopens
for 2018 beach season
CANNON BEACH — The
Haystack Rock Awareness
Program invites you to join
them daily on the beach
during low tide Friday,
Feb. 9, through the end of
October. The program is
entering its 33rd season on
the beach!
Having educated more
than a million visitors and
thousands of students over
the years, the program’s
mission is to “protect,
through education, the
intertidal and bird ecology
of the Marine Garden and
National Wildlife Refuge at
Haystack Rock.”
HRAP Rocky Shore
Environmental Interpret-
ers will be on the beach
during low tides to educate
visitors at Haystack Rock
about biodiversity found
on and around the rock.
Our free public education
program will change as the
seasons change, with the
arrival and departure of
various animals to the area.
We offer bird scopes,
aquaria stations, an inter-
active visitor table with
a microscope and many
other exciting educational
opportunities.

cluding families. Program
volunteers participate in
a variety of activities on
the beach and behind the
scenes, plus a chance to
make jewelry for our new
Trash Talk Project.
There is no minimum
time commitment required,
and we have wonderful
volunteers come from all
around Oregon and Wash-
ington. Those interested in
volunteering should contact
Lisa Habecker, our educa-
tion and volunteer coordi-
nator and 15-year HRAP
veteran, by email (habeck-
er@ci.cannon-beach.or.us)

Teachers, instructors or
groups interested in a field
trip and/or tour of the rock
should contact Habecker
as well.
This season we will be
offering returning favorite
and all new special events,
educational classes and
workshops for kids and
adults.

A whale of a good talk in Cannon Beach
CANNON BEACH — The next
talk in “The World of Hay-
stack Rock” lecture series
takes place 7 p.m. Wednes-
day, Feb. 14, and features
Leigh Torres, assistant
professor at Oregon State
University.
Torres’ talk is titled
“Through the Looking
Glass: New Perspectives on
Whale Ecology to Inform
Crossword Answers

The series is held the
second Wednesday of each
month through April, from
7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Can-
non Beach Library (131 N.
Hemlock St.).

14: Bill Chadwick, re-

Marine Science Center.
His talk is titled “Axial
Seamount: The most Active
Volcano in the Pacific
