Despite denial, Pope got
abuse victim’s letter
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis received a
victim’s letter in 2015 that graphically detailed
how a priest sexually abused him and how other
Chilean clergy ignored it, contradicting the
pope’s recent insistence that no victims had come
forward to denounce the cover-up, the letter’s
author and members of Francis’ own sex- abuse
commission said.
The fact that Francis received the eight-page
letter, obtained by the Associated Press, chal-
lenges his insistence that he has “zero tolerance”
for sex abuse and cover-ups. It also calls into
question his stated empathy with abuse survivors,
compounding the most serious crisis of his five-
year papacy.
The scandal exploded last month when Fran-
cis’ trip to South America was marred by protests
over his vigorous defense of Bishop Juan Bar-
ros, who is accused by victims of covering up the
abuse by the Rev. Fernando Karadima. During
the trip, Francis callously dismissed accusations
against Barros as “slander,” seemingly unaware
that victims had placed him at the scene of Karad-
ima’s crimes.
On the plane home, confronted by a reporter,
the pope said: “You, in all good will, tell me that
there are victims, but I haven’t seen any, because
they haven’t come forward.”
But members of the pope’s Commission for
the Protection of Minors say that in April 2015,
they sent a delegation to Rome specifically to
hand-deliver a letter to the pope about Barros.
The letter from Juan Carlos Cruz detailed the
abuse, kissing and fondling he says he suffered at
Karadima’s hands, which he said Barros and oth-
ers witnessed and ignored.
had coordinated with the White House in draft-
ing the document seized on by the president to
vent his grievances against the nation’s premier
law enforcement agencies.

sentenced to another
40 to 125 years
CHARLOTTE, Mich. — The former sports
doctor whose serial sexual abuse of girls and
young women upended the gymnastics world
was sentenced today to a third prison term of 40
to 125 years for molesting young athletes at an
elite Michigan training center.
Larry Nassar listened to dozens of victims
for two days last week and was almost attacked
by a man whose three daughters said they were
abused. His final sentence comes after he pleaded
guilty to molesting young athletes with ungloved
hands when they sought treatment for injuries
at Twistars, a gymnastics club that was run by a
2012 U.S. Olympic coach.
Nassar’s conduct “robbed these girls and
women of one of the most truly important human
qualities: trust,” Judge Janice Cunningham said.
The sentence is largely symbolic because the
54-year-old is already assured of spending the
rest of his life in prison. Before serving either
of his two state sentences, he must first serve
60 years in federal prison for child pornography
crimes.
In all, more than 260 women and girls
have reported being molested by Nassar, who
worked for Michigan State and USA Gymnas-
tics, the sport’s governing body, which also trains
Olympians.
Some of the cases date back to the 1990s. The
judge said the abuse “spans the country and the
world.”

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
traded insults with the top Democrat on the House
Intelligence Committee today, a day after Demo-
crats and Republicans said Trump was wrong to
assert that a GOP-produced classified memo on
FBI surveillance powers cleared him in the Rus-
sia investigation.
Trump’s attack on California Rep. Adam
Schiff came before a planned meeting of the
House intelligence panel today, where the com-
mittee is expected to consider whether to release
a Democratic rebuttal memo. Democrats are
seeking to push back on the Republican docu-
ment, which questions the FBI methods used
to apply for a surveillance warrant on a onetime
Trump campaign associate.
On Twitter, Trump called Schiff “one of the
biggest liars and leakers in Washington,” adding
that he “must be stopped.”
Schiff quickly shot back: “Instead of tweeting
false smears, the American people would appre-
ciate it if you turned off the TV and helped solve
the funding crisis, protected Dreamers or ... really
anything else.”
Trump also praised Committee Chairman
Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., on Twitter, call-
ing him a man of tremendous courage and grit,
may someday be recognized as a Great Ameri-
can Hero for what he has exposed and what he
has had to endure!”
The committee did not release the Demo-
cratic memo last week, with one Republican
member saying revisions were needed so the
memo would not endanger national security. Key
Democrats are seeking to put out the document,
including the Senate’s Democratic leader, Chuck
Schumer of New York, who urged Trump to back
the public release and said that refusing to do so
would show the president’s intent to undermine
the Russia investigation.
Schiff has branded the GOP memo “a polit-
ical hit job” and has questioned whether Nunes

troops have started to draw down from Iraq fol-
lowing Baghdad’s declaration of victory over the
Islamic State group last year, according to West-
ern contractors at a U.S.-led coalition base in
Iraq.
Dozens of American soldiers have been trans-
ported from Iraq to Afghanistan on daily flights
over the past week, along with weapons and
equipment, the contractors said.
Two Iraqi officials confirmed to The Associ-
ated Press that the U.S.-led coalition and the Iraqi
government have reached an agreement to draw
down troops in Iraq for the first time since the
war against IS was launched over three years ago.
The Iraqi officials said the process has not
officially begun.
However, an AP reporter at the Al-Asad base
in western Iraq saw troop movements reflect-
ing the contractors’ account of a drawdown. The
contractors and the Iraqi officials spoke on con-
dition of anonymity in line with regulations and
declined to reveal the exact size of the drawdown.

draws backlash
NEW YORK — A Ram truck ad that used a
speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., is drawing a
backlash.
The ad shows people doing service-oriented
tasks set against audio of King’s speech, which
urges people to be “great” by serving the greater
good rather than being successful. It was sup-
posed to highlight the volunteer program Ram
Nation.
But it was criticized by viewers and ad experts
alike for forging too tenuous a connection with
the civil rights hero.

GPS-based system could have
prevented latest deadly train crash
CAYCE, S.C. — Federal investigators spent a second day today at the site of a deadly
train crash in South Carolina, where an Amtrak train was mistakenly sent off a main track and
down a side spur — and into a parked freight train. The ensuing crash early Sunday killed two
people and injured more than 100 passengers.
The investigation headed by the National Transportation Safety Board could take years,
but federal investigators are already focusing on one critical factor: that a switch, set manu-
ally, may have caused the passenger train to barrel down the wrong track.
Moreover, authorities say the crash could have been prevented with a GPS-based system
called “positive train control,” which knows the location of all trains and the positions of all
switches in an area and is designed to prevent two trains from traveling on the same track at
the same time.
Regulators have demanded the implementation of positive train control for decades, and
the technology is now in place in the Northeast, but railroads that operate tracks used by
Amtrak elsewhere in the U.S. have won repeated extensions from the government. The dead-
line for installing such equipment is now the end of 2018.
On Wednesday, a chartered Amtrak train carrying Republican members of Congress to
a retreat slammed into a garbage truck at a crossing where locals said the safety arms were
down even when no trains approached. That accident in rural Virginia killed one person in
the truck and injured six others.
And on Dec. 18, an Amtrak train ran off the rails along a curve during its inaugural run
near Tacoma, Washington, killing three people and injuring dozens. It was going nearly 80
mph, more than twice the speed limit.
