Star was the “dog of
honor,” Roxie and Maria
were Kathy’s “dogmaids.”
The dogs also were also instrumental in Nathan’s
marriage proposal.
Nathan and Kathy were spending a lazy day on Jan. 1,
2017 when Roxie, with a note attached to the collar, came
up to Kathy, who was in another room down the hall from
Nathan. At first, Kathy thought it was Nathan’s ploy to go
somewhere.
She read the note: “Dad wants….”
Kathy was adamant: They weren’t going anywhere, she
said.
Then Maria appeared with another note attached to her
collar.
It said, “...to know if….”
Finally, Star appeared with a third note: “you’ll marry
him.”
But before she would reply, Kathy had a request of her
own of Nathan. “I said that now that they’ve asked me, you
need to get on one knee.”
The wedding day was balmy, with a temperature of 80
degrees. “It was perfect,” Kathy said.
With her hair done by the Beauty and the Beach salon,
Kathy wore a casual sheath wedding dress and went
barefoot. Nathan wore a loose-fitting shirt and dress pants.
Local wedding officiant Patricia Durkin performed the
ceremony on th beach near Chapman Point, and the couple
wrote their own vows. Photographer Julie Adams took the
photos, and the Basketcase in Cannon Beach provided the
flowers, including boutonnieres for the dogs’ collars.
They had their wedding dinner at the Wayfarer
Restaurant, and others dining at the restaurant bought them
champagne to celebrate. “They were total strangers, and
they were very sweet,” Kathy said.
She called Cannon Beach a “perfect place” for a
wedding.
“Cannon Beach is so laid back and casual. People there
are so friendly,” she said.
Although it was a little difficult to plan a long-distance
wedding, Kathy said those she worked with recommended
other experienced vendors to help her.
Her advice to couples considering a beach wedding
away from their home: “Do your research on the Internet,
but also speak to people and get recommendations,” Kathy
said. “Ask vendors who they work with. It makes it a lot
more comfortable for the bride and the bridal party.”
