involved in Nathan
and Kathy Vasquez’s
decision to be married in
Cannon Beach.
The Colorado
residents wanted
to be close to a
beloved dog that used

to visit the beach with them.
“Nathan and I have spent a lot of time in dog rescue,”
Kathy said. “Several years ago we rescued a beautiful dog.”
But the dog developed sarcoma in her leg, and the leg
was amputated.
“We knew she was going to die, and we wanted her to
be able to run along the beach before she died.”
They brought her – and later, her ashes – to Cannon
Beach, and in subsequent years, they brought many dogs
to the beach.
“As a family, we fell in love with the place, Kathy said.
“It only made sense that we would get married there. We
felt the dogs were with us.”
In fact, all of the bride’s attendants at the Sept. 15, 2017
wedding were dogs, the three “smooth” (short-haired)
collies the Vasquezes adopted.
Star, the “dog of honor,” came from a shelter in
California. Roxie, originally from Indiana, and Maria, a
smooth collie-pit bull mix, which had been in a shelter in
Spain for five years, were Kathy’s “dogmaids.” >>
