Tuesday at Jewell.
The Blue Jays outscored Wil-
lamette Valley 25-22 in the second
half, despite playing with just five
players.
Ben Stahly led Jewell with
15 points, six rebounds and four
steals. Nathan Nelson scored 10
points with eight boards. Jacob
Lilley added nine points and nine
rebounds for the Jays.

SEASIDE — Scappoose put up
a challenge, but Seaside held on for
a 57-53 win over the Indians in a
Cowapa League boys basketball
opener Tuesday at the Gulls’ Nest.
Duncan Thompson scored 22
points to lead Seaside, now ranked
second in the latest 4A OSAA
rankings.
Chase Januik tossed in 11 points
and Payton Westerholm added
nine, despite playing limited min-
utes because of foul trouble in the
first half.
Seaside plays Friday at Astoria.

JEWELL — Jewell moved into
sole possession of second place in
the Casco League standings with
a 51-46 win Tuesday over Willa-
mette Valley Christian in a girls
basketball game at Jewell.
Emma Guillen sparked the
Lady Jays with 20 points, five
rebounds and three steals. Team-
mate Haley Norman scored 12
points with eight boards and two
assists. Gabi Morales added 10
points and eight rebounds for Jew-
ell, which was outscored 25-17
over the second and third quarters.
The Jays rebounded by win-
ning the fourth, 14-9.

Warrenton win streak over

ARRENTON — Warrenton’s eight-game win
W
streak came crashing to the floor Tuesday night
on the Warriors’ home court.
Hosting Rainier in a big Lewis & Clark League
showdown, the Warriors were held to a season low in
points, while the No. 4-ranked Columbians did just
enough for a 40-25 win.
Rainier zipped out to a 28-10 halftime lead behind
11 first half points from Desirae Hansen.
The Columbians went cold in the second half,
however, as Warrenton crawled back to within 30-18
entering the final quarter.
But Rainier shut down Warrenton’s normally
high-powered offense, forcing 19 Warrenton turn-
overs and holding the Warriors to just 7-for-44 from
the field, 4-of-24 from the 3-point line.
Hansen finished with 17 points, while Fernanda
Alvarez led the Warriors with eight.
Columbians cruise past Warrenton boys

WARRENTON — Two teams
looking to reverse their fortunes in the
second half of the league season met
on the court Tuesday night in Warren-
ton, where Rainier posted a 43-29 win
over the Warriors in a Lewis & Clark
League boys basketball game.
Rainier’s lead reached 34-15 late
in the third quarter, before the War-
riors went on an 11-2 run to start the
fourth, climbing to within 37-28.
Dawson Carr pumped in 16 points
to lead the Columbians, who improve
to 3-6 in league. Ayden Stephens and
Logan Fischer scored eight points
apiece for the Warriors (0-9).

KNAPPA — Knappa built a
31-point halftime lead on its way
to an easy 73-39 win over Life
Christian in a Northwest League
boys basketball game Tuesday.
Dale Takalo scored 13 of his
30 points in the first quarter, as the
Loggers scored at will in building
a 30-8 lead after one period.
Dale Takalo finished with 30,
and Eli Takalo added 14 for the
No. 3-ranked Loggers.
WSU QB Hilinski dies in apparent suicide

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washing-
ton State quarterback Tyler Hilinski
has died from an apparently self-in-
flicted gunshot wound, police said.
The 21-year-old Hilinski was dis-
covered in his apartment after he
didn’t show up for practice Tuesday.
A rifle “was recovered next to Hil-
inski and a suicide note was found,”
according to the Pullman Police
Department.
“We are deeply saddened to hear
the news of Tyler’s passing,” Wash-
ington State coach Mike Leach said
in a statement. “He was an incredible
young man and everyone who had the
privilege of knowing him was better
for it. The entire WSU community
mourns as thoughts and prayers go
out to his family.”
Hilinski was the presumptive
starting quarterback going into next
season. He started Washington State’s
Holiday Bowl loss to Michigan State
after senior Luke Falk was unable to
play due to a wrist injury.
“The tragic news today surround-
ing Tyler Hilinski is devastating to
all. Tyler was a tremendous individ-
ual, great friend and teammate, and
he will be deeply missed. Our hearts
go out to his family and friends,”
interim athletic director John John-
son said. “Earlier tonight, the foot-
ball team was brought together and
informed of the tragedy. There, they
were met by campus and department
counseling and psychological ser-
vices, including athletics’ on-staff
clinical psychologist and a licensed
mental health counselor, along with
WSU Athletics medical team. The
university will continue to coordi-
nate and provide ongoing counseling
care for all student-athletes as long as
needed.”
SEASIDE — Seaside snapped a
five-game losing streak and scored
over 30 points for the first time in
almost a month Tuesday night, in a
38-25 win over visiting Scappoose
in a Cowapa League girls basket-
ball opener.
The Lady Gulls outscored the
Indians 14-2 in a decisive third
quarter, and Seaside held off a
Scappoose rally in the fourth.
Annaka Garhofer was 3-of-9
from the 3-point line and scored 12
points to lead the Gulls. Teammate
Bryre Babbitt added nine points
and 10 rebounds.
“Feels good to get a win,” said
Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “We
had some solid play from lots
of kids, and finally scored a few
points from Annaka and Bryre.”
The Gulls were 14-of-48 from
the field, 6-for-20 at the free throw
line.

Valley Catholic
escapes Astoria

The Astoria boys basket-
ball team held a two-point lead at
halftime against the state’s third-
ranked team Tuesday night at the
Brick House.
But Valley Catholic responded
by outscoring the Fishermen 17-6
in the third quarter and posting a
58-51 win in a Cowapa League
opener.
“We competed, and I was really
happy with the way we played,”
said Astoria coach Kevin Goin.
“It was good to see us making
improvements. We put up some
points and had three players in dou-
ble figures. But we had a hard time
stopping their big guy (6-foot-6
Ben Robbins), and Valley Cath-
olic did a nice job making their
free throws in the fourth quarter
(11-for-12).”
Robbins led all scorers with
22 points, while Karsten Johnson
scored 14 points to lead the Fish-
ermen. Astoria teammates Josh
Olson and Ian Hunt added 13
points apiece.
Astoria hosts Seaside in a Clat-
sop Clash matchup Friday.
