Stayton stall beats Astoria girls The Daily Astorian S hooting woes, foul trouble, turnovers and a four-minute stall by Stayton … it was all too much to overcome for the Astoria girls basketball team Friday night. The visiting Eagles were on target right from the start at the Brick House, in a 39-20 victory over the No. 7-ranked Lady Fishermen. Astoria finished 7-of-39 from the field (which included a 2-for-18 performance in the first half), and the Lady Fish were just 4-of-18 from the free throw line. Coupled with untimely turnovers and early foul trouble for Astoria’s Brooklynn Hankwitz, Stayton cruised to its ninth straight win. Stayton’s pair of 6-foot-1 post players, senior Alexa Bender and junior Marri Marti- nez, were also tough to stop. Martinez overcame some foul trouble of her own to score 18 points, and Bender added 12 as the two combined for 30 points. Leading 27-13 to start the fourth quarter, the Eagles held the ball at midcourt and ran nearly four minutes off the clock before the Fishermen challenged defensively. Sam Hemsley scored eight points to lead Astoria, which opens Cowapa League play Tuesday at home vs. Valley Catholic. Second half run leads Stayton past Astoria boys Both teams had problems scoring, but one good quarter for Stayton made the difference Friday night at the Brick House. The Eagles led just 20-15 at halftime, but went on a 17-3 run in the third period on their way to a 41-24 win over the Fishermen in a nonleague boys basketball game. Astoria’s Karsten Johnson had three early scores to give the Fishermen a 9-4 lead, but Stayton reeled off 14 straight points for an 18-9 advantage. Riley Nichol slam-dunked a lob pass from Nathan Hendricks to cap the run. Johnson followed with a no-look reverse layup for Astoria. Stayton was 6-of-24 from the field in the first half, while the Fishermen were just 1-of- 15 from the 3-point line for the game. Astoria made just three field goals in the second half, while Johnson led the Fishermen with 14 points. Seaside boys rally to beat North Marion SEASIDE — The Seaside Gulls rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit Friday, and escaped their own court with a 58-55 win over North Marion in a nonleague boys basketball game. Seaside “didn’t show up in the first half,” said Gulls’ coach Bill Westerholm. “Hopefully we learned a lesson.” The Gulls finished 8-of-19 at the free throw line, which kept the Huskies in the game. Seaside finished 22-of-61 from the field, including 6-of-17 from the 3-point line. Ryan Hague paced the scoring with 22 points, followed by Duncan Thompson with 15 points and nine rebounds. Chase Januik dished out five assists and Payton Westerholm had five steals. The Gulls open Cowapa League play Tues- day at home vs. Scappoose. North Marion tops Seaside girls, 42-21 SEASIDE — North Marion held Seaside to a season low in points, and the Huskies scored in double figures in every quarter, in a 42-21 win Friday over the Gulls in a nonleague game at Seaside. The Gulls lost their fifth in a row, which was also their fifth straight game with under 30 points. “Ready or not, here comes league,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “We are in a pain- ful process of trying to figure out how to score. But there are signs of life.” Seaside was 8-for-49 from the field, 2-of-15 from the 3-point line. Annaka Garhofer led the Gulls with six points and three steals, and teammate Gretchen Hoekstre had seven rebounds. Seaside hosts Scappoose Tuesday in a Cow- apa League opener. Knappa boys beat Nestucca CLOVERDALE — Dale Takalo scored 16 points Saturday in Cloverdale, helping Knappa to a 58-37 win over Nestucca in a Northwest League boys basketball game. The Loggers built a 28-17 halftime lead, before the Bobcats came back and played evenly with Knappa in the third quarter. “We looked like we were playing our third road game in six days,” said Knappa coach Chris Spencer. “They were scrappy, but we had some contributors off the bench and finally wore them down in the fourth quarter.” Devin Hoover and Braedon Eltagonde both saw extended minutes and both scored points, while Takalo scored 13 of his 16 in the second half. Eli Takalo added 12 points for the Log- gers, who closed the game with a 16-6 run. Knappa returns for home games this week vs. Life Christian and Gaston. Miller hits buzzer- beater, Knappa girls get past Nestucca, 29-28 CLOVERDALE — After 12 straight losses to open the season, the Knappa Lady Loggers have won two in a row, by a combined three points. Knappa followed Thursday’s 29-28 win at Columbia Christian with a 42-40 victory Satur- day afternoon at Nestucca. Aiko Miller’s eight-foot shot at the buzzer represented the winning points for the Loggers, who are right back in the thick of the league playoff race. Nestucca falls to 0-12. “We came out shooting really well, then kind of let (the Bobcats) back in it,” said Knappa coach Marie Green. “It was just a fun, back and forth game from there.” The Loggers took possession of a jump ball with 1.1 seconds left, which set up Miller’s game-winner. Miller and Paris Vanderburg each scored 10 points, while Vanderburg also had 10 rebounds and five assists. Madelynn Weaver added nine points and six boards, and Vicki Ramvick had seven points and five rebounds.
