beat Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY — While
Damien Lillard tries to get past a
lingering injury, the Portland Trail
Blazers are relying on each other
to fashion a nice run of positive
results.
CJ McCollum had 27 points
and seven assists, and the Trail
Blazers beat the Oklahoma City
Thunder 117-106 on Tuesday
night in the opener of a four-game
trip.
Shabazz Napier added 21
points and Jusuf Nurkic had 20
points and eight rebounds for
Portland, which moved past Okla-
homa City into second in the
Northwest Division standings
with its seventh win in its last nine
games against the Thunder.
Portland has won four of five
overall despite playing most of
that stretch without Lillard, who
sat out for the seventh time in the
last nine games with a left calf
strain.
“There’s not as much pres-
sure,” McCollum said. “Obvi-
ously, you’re down a guy like
Damien, who’s able to do every-
thing. and can take over a quar-
ter and bail us out at times. When
we come on a road trip like this,
the guys are like, ‘Oh, Damien’s
hurt. We’re not supposed to win.’
I think everybody plays a little bit
looser, understanding that we’re
playing against upper-tier Western
Conference competition.
“Executing and playing the
right way has been big for us and
being comfortable with making
aggressive mistakes, then mov-
ing on.”

A balanced scoring attack helped the Lady
Fish build a 53-19 lead going into the final
period, as sophomore Kajsa Jackson paced
Astoria with 12 points, followed by junior
Gracie Cummings and sophomore Hailey
O’Brien with 10 apiece. Junior Sam Hemsley
tossed in nine points for Astoria, 8-4 overall.
The Lady Fish host Stayton Friday.

EASIDE — The Cascade Cougars have
seen enough of the Cowapa League,
thank you very much.
Fortunately for the Cougs, Tuesday night’s
71-50 nonleague boys basketball loss to Sea-
side was the last Cascade will see of the Cow-
apa, barring a playoff meeting.
The Cougars are rated eighth in the lat-
est OSAA Class 4A rankings — which would
make them fourth in the six-team Cowapa.
And against the Cowapa’s top three teams,
the Cougars haven’t had a chance.
Cascade has lost five games, and that list
includes losses to No. 1-ranked Banks (74-
38), fourth-ranked Valley Catholic (60-33)
and now the 21-point loss to the No. 3-ranked
Gulls.
The Cougars did manage to beat Scap-
poose last week, the Cowapa team that will
compete at the 5A level next season.
Seaside trailed 13-8 early in Tues-
day’s game, but by late second quarter, the
Gulls were running circles around the taller
Cougars.
A 3-pointer by Chase Januik and a three-
point play by Payton Westerholm gave Sea-
side a 33-22 lead at the break.
Januik and Ryan Hague both drained
3-pointers early in the second half for Seaside.
Duncan Thompson and Rafi Sibony added
baskets, and the Gulls had secured another
win by the middle of the third quarter.
Januik led all scorers with 20 points, fol-
lowed by Hague with 14 and Westerholm
with 13.
Cascade clips
Seaside girls, 56-24
SEASIDE — A hot-shooting Cascade
team left Seaside with a 56-24 win Tuesday
night, in a nonleague girls basketball game at
the Gulls’ Nest.
The No. 6-ranked Cougars led from start
to finish, scoring the first eight points of the
game and building a 34-12 halftime lead.
Cascade highlighted the first half with a
pair of buzzer-beaters — 3-pointers by Kirs-
tin Cade to end the first quarter and Halle’
Wright to end the second.
Gracie Rasmussen and Wright scored 10
points apiece for Cascade, while Gretchen
Hoekstre had 14 points to lead the Gulls, who
lost their fourth straight.

Astoria boys snap losing
streak at Estacada
ESTACADA — Karsten Johnson hit a
3-pointer with 12 seconds left, and the Asto-
ria boys basketball team snapped a six-game
losing skid on the road Tuesday night with a
41-40 win over Estacada.
Johnson’s late score put the Fishermen up
by one, and Astoria held on from there to score
a much-needed road victory.
“We played good defense and made the
stop at the end,” said Astoria coach Kevin
Goin. “We won at all four levels (boys’ and
girls’ varsity and junior varsity games), so it
was good for us.”
Josh Olson scored 13 points to lead Asto-
ria, which trailed 26-20 at halftime, then out-
scored the Rangers 21-14 in the second half.
Ian Hunt added nine points for the Fisher-
men, who improve to 3-10, while the Rang-
ers drop to 1-11. Astoria hosts Stayton Friday.
Astoria girls pound
Estacada, 61-29
ESTACADA — The Astoria Lady Fisher-
men continued their climb up the 4A rankings
Tuesday night, as they scored an easy 61-29
nonleague girls basketball win at Estacada.
Now rated seventh in the OSAA rankings,
Astoria led 19-5 after one quarter.
WARRENTON — The Warrenton girls
basketball team was held far below their scor-
ing average Tuesday night, but a win’s a win
for the Warriors, who held off Portland Chris-
tian 41-35 for their seventh victory in a row.
The upstart Royals trailed just 13-9 after
one quarter, but Warrenton had increased its
lead to 20-11 by halftime, and held off Port-
land Christian from there.
Fernanda Alvarez and Morgan Blodgett
combined for 21 of Warrenton’s 41 points.
The 12th-ranked Warriors improve to 5-2
for third place in the Lewis & Clark League
standings.
Portland Christian defeated Warrenton in
the boys’ game, 44-27.
Ilwaco boys rally
for win over Ocosta
ILWACO, Wash. — Ilwaco overcame a
20-8 deficit after one quarter Tuesday night,
in a 67-58 win over Ocosta in a Pacific 2B
League boys basketball game.
The Fishermen outscored the Wildcats
37-20 over the second and third quarters to
avoid the big upset.
Ilwaco had four players in double figures,
led by Reese Tynkila’s 19 points. Alex Kaino
added 14, Daniel Whiting had 13 and Calvin
Baze scored 10.
Naselle boys score win
over Firm Foundation
BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — Jacob
Eaton scored 15 points and Kolby Glenn
tossed in 11 to help the Naselle Comets to a
51-33 win at Firm Foundation, in a Washing-
ton 1B league boys basketball game Tuesday.
The Comets went on a 22-9 run in the sec-
ond quarter.
