The Daily Astorian S EASIDE — The high school wrestling powers of Northwest Oregon met Friday and Saturday at Seaside in the annual Pacific Rim Armed Forces Tournament. Competing in their last Pac Rim as a member of the Cowapa League, Scappoose powered its way to the team championship ahead of wrestling powers Tigard and Estacada. Meanwhile, wrestlers from the Lower Columbia region had their share of success individually — just not as much in the team standings. After a second-place showing in last year’s meet, Ilwaco slipped to sixth, while Knappa, Seaside, War- renton and Astoria all finished in the bottom six of the team standings. Fifteen schools took part in the annual tournament. Knappa had one championship qualifier, as junior Luke Goozee reached the finals at 132 pounds. Goozee scored three straight pins, including a 43-sec- ond fall over Matthew LaVoie of St. Helens in the semifinals. In the title match, Goozee faced Emilio Jimenez of Class 6A Tigard. Jimenez built an early lead, only to have Goozee battle back and tie the match, 10-10 in the final minute. A late escape gave Jimenez the one point he needed for an 11-10 victory. Ilwaco’s Ghannon Whelden took second at 126 pounds, and teammate Marcello Lazaro was second at 285. Keegan Kemmer of Ilwaco lost a first-round match to Knappa’s Robert Pina, but wrestled back to place third at 120 pounds. Teammate Royce Murry was third at 152. The highlight for the home team was a third-place fin- ish for Seaside’s Luke Nelson, who went 5-1 and scored an 8-1 decision over Yamhill-Carlton’s Zackary Rodri- guez in the consolation final. After a first-round bye, Astoria’s Trey Hagemen won a match to reach the semifinals at 160, where he lost a 12-4 decision to Estacada’s Justin Drury. Hageman bounced back and eventually placed fourth. Astoria held Corbett to just two points in the first half, as the Lady Fishermen cruised to an easy 53-21 win over the Cardinals in girls basket- ball action Friday at the Brick House. Brooklynn Hankwitz tossed in a game-high 17 points for Astoria, which led 31-2 at the break. Gracie Cummings added 10 points. The Lady Fishermen return to action Tuesday at Estacada. Newport scores win over Seaside NEWPORT — Newport’s Dakota Rundell poured in 22 points — which nearly matched the team total for Sea- side — in the Cubs’ 44-23 win over the Gulls in a nonleague girls basket- ball game Friday. The points were hard to come by for the short-handed Gulls, who are still playing without Emy Kiser, and were without Bryre Babbitt Friday. Newport led 23-7 at halftime, before Annaka Garhofer knocked down a 3-pointer and Jetta Ideue con- verted a three-point play to bring the Gulls within 10 points early in the third quarter. But Rundell got hot as the game progressed, as the sophomore made three 3-pointers in the final quarter to help the Cubs pull away for their sec- KNAPPA — The Knappa Log- gers have won their last three games by a combined 98 points, with the latest victory an easy 67-37 win over Faith Bible in a Northwest League boys basketball game Friday. Knappa led 44-9 at half- time, as the No. 4-ranked Log- gers improved to 4-0 in league, 9-2 overall. Dale Takalo scored 20 points and Colton Weirup added 11 for the Knappa starters, who only played two-and-a-half quarters. Knappa will look to add another 30-point win tonight at City Chris- tian, before they travel to No. 1-ranked Columbia Christian Thursday. Gulls beat Newport in rematch, 64-63 Trey Hagemen, left, wrestles for Astoria High School at the Pacific Rim Armed Forces Tour- nament in Seaside. Beau Reynolds struggles to free himself from an opponent while wrestling for Warrenton at the Pacific Rim Armed Forces Tournament in Seaside. GIRLS BASKETBALL Astoria soars past Corbett Cardinals Knappa defeats Faith Bible ond win over the Gulls this season. Sisters lead Faith Bible past Knappa KNAPPA — Sixth-ranked Faith Bible stayed perfect (3-0) in league play, with a 56-30 win at Knappa in a Northwest League girls basketball game Friday. Faith Bible sisters Sarah and Katie Fajer combined to score 27 points for the Falcons, who led 25-8 after one quarter. Madelynn Weaver had nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Lady Loggers, who are still looking for their first win. Vicki Ramvick added six points and four rebounds. Two more wins for Warrenton Warriors PORTLAND — After losing three of four games in mid-December, the Warrenton Lady Warriors have now won six in a row, all by 20 points or more, as they close in on first place in the Lewis & Clark League girls bas- ketball standings. Warrenton added two wins in two days over the weekend, with a 61-30 victory Friday at home over Oregon Episcopal, followed by a 62-42 win Saturday at Riverdale, which lost its seventh in a row. “We’re just playing great team bas- ketball,” said Warrenton coach Robert Hoepfl. “Riverdale has a couple good players, and we held their top scorer to just 13 points. It’s another good win. That’s six in a row by 20-plus points.” Warrenton junior Fernanda Alva- rez led all scorers with 18 points. “She was a beast in the second half,” Hoepfl said. “She had three fouls in four minutes in the first half, but just came out in the second half and was unstoppable. She was doing everything a coach wants.” Morgan Blodgett and Tyla Lit- tle tacked on 13 points apiece for the Warriors, with Blodgett also grabbing 10 rebounds. In Friday’s win over OES, Alva- rez had 16 points and Little had 13, as Warrenton led 18-3 after one quarter. NEWPORT — Vengeance was Seaside’s Friday night at Newport, where the Gulls reminded the Cubs that they are still the defending state champion in Class 4A boys basketball. After a 70-59 loss to Newport Dec. 16 at Seaside, the Gulls won the rematch Friday on the Cubs’ home floor, 64-63. In a potential state championship matchup, Seaside led by as much as 10 points in the fourth, and the No. 5-ranked Gulls made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the No. 2-ranked Cubs. Chase Januik scored 20 points to lead Seaside, and the Gulls had three other players in double figures to counter 35 points by Newport’s Kye Blaser. Newport had three 3-pointers in the first quarter, but the Gulls still led after one period, 15-13. Back-to-back scores by Januik helped Seaside open up a 23-15 lead early in the second quarter; and baskets by Ryan Hague and Payton Westerholm kept the Gulls in front throughout the first half, which ended with Seaside ahead, 36-31. The Gulls maintained their lead in the third period, as Seaside’s lead reached 43-35. Blaser kept the Cubs close, but Westerholm made 4-of-6 free throws in the final 1:02 to clinch the win. Warrenton loses to OES, Riverdale PORTLAND — Warrenton continues to close the gap, but the Warriors are still looking for their first league win, following two losses over the weekend. No. 11-ranked Oregon Epis- copal posted a 43-31 win over the Warriors at Warrenton on Friday, and Riverdale held off the War- riors 52-42 Saturday in Portland. Warrenton hosts Portland Chris- tian Tuesday. Eliza Bannister scored 24 points and Madeline Jacobson tossed in 16 for Ilwaco, which outscored South Bend 35-16 over the second and third quarters. — The Daily Astorian NASELLE, Wash. — Kolby Glenn scored 15 points and Corey Gregory added 12 for Naselle, but the Comets still came up short Sat- urday night, as Winlock escaped Naselle with a 57-54 win. Nick Patching led the Car- dinals with 14 points, which included four crucial free throws in the closing minute. — The Daily Astorian
