Trump boasts of
‘nuclear button’ but
doesn’t really have one
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump
boasted that he has a bigger and more powerful
“nuclear button” than North Korean leader Kim
Jong Un does — but the president doesn’t actu-
ally have a physical button.
The president’s Tuesday evening tweet came
in response to Kim’s New Year’s address, in
which he repeated fiery nuclear threats against
the United States. Kim said he has a “nuclear
button” on his office desk and warned that “the
whole territory of the U.S. is within the range of
our nuclear strike.”
Trump mocked that assertion, writing, “Will
someone from his depleted and food starved
regime please inform him that I too have a
Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more
powerful one than his, and my Button works!”
But despite ratcheting up the tension, Trump
doesn’t really have a nuclear button.
The process for launching a nuclear strike
is secret and complex and involves the use of a
nuclear “football,” which is carried by a rotating
group of military officers everywhere the presi-
dent goes and is equipped with communication
tools and a book with prepared war plans.
If the president were to order a strike, he
would identify himself to military officials at the
Pentagon with codes unique to him. Those codes
are recorded on a card known as the “biscuit” that
is carried by the president at all times. He would
then transmit the launch order to the Pentagon
and Strategic Command.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump sounded open to the
possibility of an inter-Korean dialogue after Kim
made a rare overture toward South Korea in a
New Year’s address. But Trump’s ambassador
to the United Nations insisted talks would not be
meaningful unless the North was getting rid of its
nuclear weapons.
N. Korea reopens cross-
border communications
with S. Korea
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean
leader Kim Jong Un reopened a key cross-bor-
der communication channel with South Korea
for the first time in nearly two years today as the
rivals explored the possibility of sitting down and
talking after months of acrimony and fears of war.
The recent softening of contact between
the rival Koreas may show a shared interest in
improved ties, but there’s no guarantee tensions
will ease. There have been repeated attempts in
recent years by the rivals to talk, but even when
they do meet, the efforts often end in recrimina-
tions and stalemate.
Outside critics say Kim may be trying to use
better ties with South Korea as a way to weaken
the alliance between Washington and Seoul as
the North grapples with toughened international
sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs.
Kim’s latest announcement, which was read
by a senior Pyongyang official on state TV, fol-
lowed a South Korean offer on Tuesday of high-
level talks with North Korea to find ways to
cooperate on next month’s Winter Olympics in

This frame grab from video provided by Iran Press, a pro-government news agency
based in Beirut, shows pro-government demonstrators marching today in Qom, Iran.
Pro-government rallies held in Iran after unrest
TEHRAN, Iran — Tens of thousands of government supporters took to the streets across
Iran today as authorities tried to project a sense of stability after a week of nationwide protests
sparked deadly clashes and calls for the downfall of the Islamic Republic.
But even as state television broadcast swooping helicopter shots showing support among
Iran’s 80 million people for its clerically overseen government, videos emerged showing the
anti-government unrest that has swept major cities has also spread to the countryside.
The violence has killed at least 21 people and seen hundreds more arrested by authorities.
Demonstrators’ videos corresponded with Associated Press reporting from outside of Iran,
though individual activists remain unreachable and the protests for now appear leaderless. It
was not clear if new protests were held today or if the videos showed earlier incidents.
The past week’s protests have been the largest since the disputed 2009 presidential elec-
tion, which ended in bloodshed. While many Iranians denounce the violence that has accom-
panied some demonstrations, they echo the protesters’ frustration over the weak economy and
official corruption.
The protests began Dec. 28 in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city and a bastion for hard-
liners, initially focusing on Iran’s flagging economy and rising food prices. Now, they’ve mor-
phed into demands for wholesale change in Iran’s theocratic government.
State TV reported pro-government demonstrations today in dozens of cities and towns,
including Ahvaz, the capital of the oil-rich province of Khuzestan, the Kurdish town of Ker-
manshah in the country’s west and Qom, the religious capital of Shiite Islam in Iran. All those
cities have seen protests in recent days.
the South and discuss other inter-Korean issues.
Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the state-run Com-
mittee for the Peaceful Reunification, cited Kim
as welcoming South Korea’s overture and order-
ing officials to reopen a communication chan-
nel at the border village of Panmunjom. Ri also
quoted Kim as ordering officials to promptly take
substantial measures with South Korea out of a
“sincere stand and honest attitude,” according to
the North’s state TV and news agency.
2 Democrats sworn
in as senators, narrow
GOP majority
WASHINGTON — The Republican major-
ity in the Senate narrowed to 51-49 today as two
new Democratic senators were sworn into office,
complicating GOP efforts to advance the par-
ty’s legislative agenda before the 2018 midterm
elections.

Romney eyes political
resurgence in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY — He has already made
a fortune in business, managed an Olympics,
served as governor and secured a presidential
nomination. Now, Mitt Romney, at 70 years old,
is considering a new career in Congress.
Those who know Romney best expect him to
announce plans in the coming weeks to seek a
suddenly vacant Utah Senate seat. Such a deci-
sion would mark an extraordinary resurgence
for a Republican leader who had faded from the
national spotlight after two failed White House
bids and an unsuccessful push to block President
Donald Trump’s rise to power.
While Romney has softened his anti-Trump
rhetoric over the last year, longtime associates
suggest the former Massachusetts governor is
eager to bring a new moral conscience to the
Republican Party in Washington.
Romney, who moved to Utah after losing
the 2012 presidential contest, met privately with
Hatch last year to discuss Hatch’s possible retire-
ment. In the subsequent months, and with Hatch’s
apparent blessing, he quietly expressed interest in
running for the seat in Hatch’s absence. In recent
weeks, however, Hatch seemed to be changing
his mind — at Trump’s urging.

THE DAILY

A
oath of office to Doug Jones from Alabama and
Tina Smith from Minnesota.
Jones is the first Alabama Democrat elected to
the Senate in a quarter century. His victory over
Republican Roy Moore shrinks the Republican
majority, complicating Senate Majority Leader
Mitch McConnell’s efforts to move the GOP’s
agenda and President Donald Trump’s nominees.
Smith, the former lieutenant governor of Min-
nesota, was appointed to replace Al Franken fol-
lowing the Democrat’s resignation over accu-
sations of sexual misconduct. She becomes the
22nd woman currently serving in the Senate, a
record.
Jones, 63, will represent one of the most con-
servative states in the nation and is stressing his
desire to work with both parties. He will be under
pressure to find some areas of agreement with
Republicans and has cited the funding of infra-
structure improvements as one possible avenue.
Smith, 59, served as chief of staff to Minne-
sota Gov. Mark Dayton before becoming his No.
2 when the previous lieutenant governor declined
to seek a second term.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — A brutal winter storm
dumped snow, sleet and freezing rain from nor-
mally balmy Florida up the Southeast seaboard
today, delivering a white coating that some cities
hadn’t seen in decades.
Cars spun out of control on icy overpasses
from Texas to Georgia. The water park at Dis-
ney World and other Florida theme parks closed
because of the unusually cold temperatures, add-
ing to the misery of a dayslong bitter cold snap
across the country.
Forecasters warned that conditions could
worsen, especially in the Northeast.
A winter storm warning extended from the
Gulf Coast in Florida’s “Big Bend” region all the
way up the Atlantic coast. Forecasters said hur-
ricane-force winds blowing offshore on Thurs-
day could generate 24-foot seas. Coastal flood-
ing, downed trees and power lines were possible
along the East Coast.
Schools in the Southeast called off classes just
months after being shut down because of hurri-
cane threats, and police urged drivers to stay off
the roads in a region little accustomed to the kind
of winter woes common to the Northeast.
The National Weather Service said snow and
freezing rain was expected to spread up the coast
to the Carolinas and warned that icy roads and
low visibility could make driving treacherous.
Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches were possible in
eastern North Carolina.
In other parts of the U.S., dangerously cold
temperatures have been blamed for at least a
dozen deaths as well as freezing a water tower in
Iowa and halting ferry service in New York.
