NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, something Kaepernick started a year earlier to bring atten- tion to social injustices, set off a national debate that erupted once President Donald Trump chimed in. His call for owners to fire players who protested during “The Star-Spangled Banner” led to a massive show of defi- ance in the days that followed. The president’s feud with the NFL is the runaway win- ner for top sports story of 2017 in balloting by AP mem- bers and editors, easily outdis- tancing the corruption scandal engulfing college basketball and the Houston Astros win- ning their first World Series and lifting the spirits of a city devastated by Hurricane Harvey. And Ilwaco defeated Mon- tesano, 60-44, in a nonleague battle Friday. Ilwaco’s Makenzie Kaech scored 20 points, Madeline Jacobson added 18 and Eliza Bannister tossed in 13 for the Lady Fishermen, who used a 21-10 run in the third quarter to pull away. Ilwaco forced 25 turnovers, 11 in the first quarter. Kaech also had eight rebounds, four steals and four assists, while Jacobson pulled down 14 rebounds with three blocks. NASELLE, Wash. — Jacob Eaton scored 20 points — 18 in the first half — helping Naselle to an 80-32 win over Firm Foundation Christian School in a Columbia Valley 1B League game Friday at the Lyle Patter- son Gymnasium in Naselle. The annual Vince Dulcich Memorial Tournament begins Wednesday at Astoria High School. The four-day tournament features eight girls’ teams and seven boys’ teams. Girls’ games begin with pool play Wednesday night, fol- lowed by full-day schedules for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students each day, or $15 for an adult tournament pass, $10 for a student tournament pass.
