Trump, GOP plan White House
celebration as tax bill OK nears
WASHINGTON — Jubilant Republican lawmakers laid
plans to join President Donald Trump at the White House for a
victory celebration today as Congress moved one roll call away
from approving the GOP’s paramount priority, the most thorough
reshaping of the country’s tax system since the 1980s.
“Workers benefit. Wages go up. More jobs occur,” House
Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said today on NBC’s “Today,” describ-
ing what Republicans say will flow from a $1.5 trillion measure
that affects everyone’s taxes but is dominated by breaks for busi-
ness and higher earners. Democrats call the legislation a boon to
the rich that leaves middle-class and working Americans behind.
“If they think this bill is a good political argument for them, let
them think that,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.,
told reporters.
The Senate used a post-midnight vote to approve the measure
on a party-line 51-48 tally. Protesters interrupted with chants of,
“Kill the bill, don’t kill us” and Vice President Mike Pence repeat-
edly called for order. Upon passage, Republicans cheered, with
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin among them.
In an eleventh-hour hiccup Tuesday, the Senate parliamentar-
ian found that three minor provisions violated Senate rules, forcing
lawmakers to strip them out.
Republicans had rammed the bill through the House 227-203
on Tuesday with all voting Democrats in opposition. Because of
the language the Senate removed, the House had to revisit the mea-
sure Wednesday because each chamber must approve identical leg-
islation before it can be signed into law.
their pressure has sent GOP leaders back to the drawing board.
Democrats are pressing for a two- or three-week temporary
spending bill that pushes a number of unresolved issues — includ-
ing disaster aid — into the new year.
Cardinal Law, disgraced figure
in church abuse scandal, dies
VATICAN CITY — Cardinal Bernard Law, the disgraced for-
mer archbishop of Boston whose failure to stop child molesters in
the priesthood triggered the worst crisis in American Catholicism,
died today in Rome at age 86.
Law, who spent his final years in various Vatican posts, had
Shutdown clock ticking, GOP
struggling for spending deal
WASHINGTON — Republicans who control Congress are
struggling to come up with a must-pass measure to avoid a govern-
ment shutdown this weekend.
House GOP leaders are short of votes, and have scrapped plans
to combine a short-term spending bill with $81 billion worth of
disaster aid and a $658 billion Pentagon funding measure.
Conservatives are upset with the price tag for hurricane aid, and
been sick and was recently hospitalized.
Law was once one of the most important figures in the U.S.
church, wielding considerable influence inside the Vatican. From
1984 until he resigned under pressure 18 years later, he was spiri-
tual leader in Boston, the nation’s fourth-largest archdiocese, with
1.8 million Catholics.
But in 2002, The Boston Globe began a series of stories that
revealed that Law and his predecessors had transferred child-mo-
lesting priests from parish to parish without alerting parents or
police — a scandal later chronicled in the Oscar-winning film
“Spotlight.”
