HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS ROUNDUP
Seahawks
need help
in playoff
chase after
blowout
Associated Press
RENTON, Wash. — Pete Car-
roll was notably somber after the
most lopsided loss of his Seattle
Seahawks tenure.
Seattle has generally thrived in
important games with something
at stake. In this case it was the
NFC West lead and a much easier
path toward a sixth straight play-
off appearance. And it was com-
ing two weeks after one of Seat-
tle’s more complete performances
in recent seasons with a convinc-
ing 24-10 win over Philadelphia.
All of those factors made Sun-
day’s 42-7 blowout loss to the
Rams so shocking, and tough for
the Seahawks to accept.
The Seahawks (8-6) still have
fleeting playoff hopes, but have
no room for error the rest of the
way if they intend on finding their
way to the postseason. Wins over
Dallas and Arizona seem like
absolutes, and the Seahawks will
likely need help from others.
The loss felt like a tipping
point for the finest era in Sea-
hawks history. They are becom-
ing less the brash, unapologetic
bullies of the NFC West and more
an older, expensive roster likely in
need of some remodeling.
It’s big picture stuff that the
Seahawks will need to address in
the offseason but was on every-
one’s mind in the aftermath of
such a deflating loss to the new
upstarts in the division.
“That wasn’t anything like
it’s been since I got here,” Seat-
tle center Justin Britt said after
the loss. “The Rams are a hell of a
team this year and they have a lot
of depth and really good players.”

T
he Gladstone Gladiators brought their
in-your-face defense and a quick, ath-
letic offense Tuesday night to Astoria.
And combined with just “one of those
nights” for the Fishermen, Gladstone turned
a 28-21 halftime lead into a 49-21 victory, as
Astoria went scoreless in the second half.
The Fishermen trailed 9-4 early, before bas-
kets by Karsten Johnson and Ian Hunt pulled
Astoria into a 10-10 tie after one quarter.
Gladstone soon took control, however,
early in the second period, with back-to-
back 3-pointers off the bench from Matthew
Lehrbach.
The Gladiators also got hot from the field,
hitting 12-of-22 shots in the first half, while
the Fishermen struggled with turnovers and
simply creating shots.
A 3-pointer by Astoria’s Ryan Stenblom
near the end of the second quarter were the
final points of the night for Astoria, which was
0-for-12 from the field in the second half, with
no free throw attempts and nine turnovers.
Lyric Warren had 11 points and Jude Ash-
pole added 10 for the Gladiators, while John-
son and Hunt had six points apiece for the
Fishermen.

Seaside defeats
North Bend, 72-47
SEASIDE — The Seaside Gulls jumped
right back into the win column Tuesday after-
noon, with a 72-47 victory over North Bend
in a nonleague boys basketball game at the
Gulls’ Nest.
Coming off a loss to Newport last Satur-
day in the championship game of the Holi-
day Classic, Seaside built a 12-5 lead early in
Tuesday’s contest and never looked back.
Astor Landwehr, Rafi Sibony and Beau
Johnson all had 3-pointers for the Gulls in the
first half, which ended in a 35-21 lead.
The Gulls were short-handed with Ryan
Hague out of the lineup, but still finished with
four players in double figures.
Payton Westerholm led the way with 18
points, followed by Chase Januik (15), Dun-
can Thompson (12) and Sibony (10).
“We did a better job sharing the ball,
played better defense, and we had some dif-
ferent guys step up and produce,” said Sea-
side coach Bill Westerholm. “And that’s going
to help us in the long run. Astor (Landwehr)
went from not playing in the championship
game (of he Holiday Classic) to scoring nine
points. And Rafi played well — that was his
first 3-pointer of the season.”

Gladstone, 54-27
GLADSTONE — The Astoria girls bas-
ketball team handed head coach Mike Jacob-
son a nice birthday present Tuesday night,
with a 54-27 victory at Gladstone.
The No. 6-ranked Lady Fishermen built a
33-19 halftime lead, then outscored the Glad-
iators 10-1 in the third quarter.
McKailyn Rogers scored 16 points and
teammate Brooklynn Hankwitz added 10 for
Astoria, which improved to 5-2 overall.

team’s first 14 points, for a 14-6 lead.
Baskets by Annaka Garhofer, Ruby Davis,
Gretchen Hoekstre and Ideue pushed the
Gulls’ lead to 23-14.
A three-point play by Bryre Babbitt and
another trey by Garhofer highlighted a 10-2
run to start the second half.
It’s “nice to get a win,” said Seaside coach
Mike Hawes. “We’re transitioning from a
four-guard team to a two-post team, and try-
ing to figure things out. Our young posts,
Gretchen Hoekstre and Ruby Davis, did a
great job on the boards, and even found some
points for us.”
Ideue “pushed the pace when she could
and got to the bucket some. North Bend is a
young team, but they played hard all night,
to their credit. Marshfield (Thursday) will be
tough, but we’ll take tonight and dream of
sugar plums.”
Ideue finished with 15 points, with four
rebounds, two assists and two steals. Davis
had six points and nine boards, while Hoek-
stre pulled down 12 rebounds.
