ILWACO, Wash. — Alex
Kaino scored 25 points to lead
Ilwaco to a 68-52 win Tuesday
night over visiting Raymond.
The Fishermen led just 30-26
at halftime, before outscoring
Raymond 38-26 over the final two
quarters.
YAMHILL — The No. 1-ranked
Yamhill-Carlton Tigers came out on
the plus side of a 56-point swing
from last year’s meeting with Sea-
side, in a nonleague girls basketball
game Tuesday night.
After losing last year’s game to
the Gulls, 52-25, Yamhill-Carlton
got even and then some, defeating
Seaside 55-26 on the Tigers’ home
floor.
Yamhill-Carlton improves to 5-0
overall, while the Gulls fall to 1-3.
A basket by Seaside’s Emy Kiser
midway through the first quarter tied
the game at 8-8, but a half-hour later,
the Tigers held a 34-8 halftime lead.
Anesha Smart had six quick
points to open the third quarter, in
which the Gulls outscored Yam-
hill-Carlton 10-6.
Annaka Garhofer had eight
points to lead Seaside, while Sadie
Horne had 15 points for the Tigers,
to go with 10 points apiece by Yam-
hill’s Megan Gaibler and Rebecca

GASTON — The Knappa Log-
gers won their third straight Tues-
day night, scoring an easy 77-55
win at Gaston to open the North-
west League schedule.
A close game at halftime
(Knappa 33, Gaston 28) turned into
a decisive win for the Loggers, who
outscored the Greyhounds 44-27 in
the second half.
“Gaston is a very much improved
team,” said Knappa coach Chris
Spencer. “They were up (19-17)
after one quarter, but we did most of
our damage in the third,” outscoring
Gaston, 31-12.
“We were hoping to use our
depth in the second half, get the ball
to Dale (Takalo) in good spots, and
have Timber (Engblom) push the
tempo,” he said. “And Dale did a
lot for us again (scoring 23 points),
Colton (Weirup) hit some big shots
and scored 13; Timber had 15 and
Eli (Takalo) finished with 11. Four
guys in double figures and scor-
ing over 70 points usually gets us a
win.”
Sophomore Riley Marshall had
23 points for the Greyhounds.
Knappa hosts Vernonia on
Thursday, with Vernonia coming off
an 83-41 win over City Christian.
RAINIER — A 21-10 run by
Rainier in the third quarter helped
the Columbians post a 61-35 win
Tuesday over Warrenton, in a
Lewis & Clark League boys bas-
ketball opener.
Rainier’s Caymon Rea scored
16 points, and his brother Conner
Rea added 15 for the Columbians,
who led just 27-16 at halftime.

Seaside boys overpower
Yamhill-Carlton, 77-55
The Daily Astorian
YAMHILL — The No. 1-ranked
Seaside boys basketball team contin-
ued to cruise through its preseason
schedule unchallenged, as the Gulls
led 22-8 after one quarter on their
way to an easy 77-55 win Tuesday
night over Yamhill-Carlton.
Seaside — which had the best 1-2
punch in the state last year with Jack-
son Januik and Hunter Thompson —
still has the best 1-2 punch at the 4A
level, with juniors Chase Januik and
Payton Westerholm, who combined
for 45 points.
Januik scored 12 of his 25 in the
fourth quarter, and Westerholm fin-
ished with 20.
The Gulls improve to 4-0, while
the Tigers fall to 1-4.

ball opener.

also had 16 for the Loggers, to go
with five steals. Paris Vanderburg

RAINIER — The Warrenton
Lady Warriors faced their first big
test of the season Tuesday night,
and played well but ultimately fell
short at Rainier, as the Columbians
held off the Warriors 49-36.
Warrenton scored a combined
five points in the first and third
quarters — not enough to keep
pace with Rainier and senior post
Desirae Hansen, who finished with
24 points.
Tyla Little led the Warriors with
18 points, while teammate Claire
Bussert had three quick fouls and
missed much of the first half.
“The shots just didn’t fall for
us in the first and third (quarters),”
said Warrenton coach Robert
Hoepfl. “We competed hard in the
second half, but we had dug too big
of a hole for ourselves. You can’t
have two- and three-point quarters
and expect to stay with a good team
like Rainier.”
