GLADSTONE — The defend-
ing state champion Seaside Seagulls
picked up right where they left off
last year, with a 68-60 win at Glad-
stone to start the 2017-18 season
Friday night, in nonleague boys bas-
ketball action.
It was a state tournament rematch
on the Gladiators’ home floor, where
Chase Januik poured in a game-high
31 points for Seaside, and teammate
Ryan Hague added 19.
Seaside defeated Gladstone
46-43 in a quarterfinal game of last
season’s state tournament in Forest
Grove. The Gulls also opened the
2016-17 season with a 71-55 vic-
tory over the Gladiators.
Gladstone was still within one
point (29-28) at halftime of Friday’s
game, before the Gulls went on a
22-16 run in the third quarter.
The Gladiators also couldn’t keep
up with Seaside at the free throw
line, where the Gulls made 27-of-32
attempts. Jackson Simmons scored
25 points for Gladstone.

KNAPPA — Knappa bounced
back from a Friday night defeat —
and last year’s early-season loss
to Astoria — with a resounding
74-36 win Saturday night over the
Fishermen in the final game of the
Loggers’ annual Tip-Off Classic.
The Fishermen were coming
off a 60-40 loss to Oregon Epis-
copal the night before, and Toledo
shocked the Loggers 60-44 in Fri-
day’s nightcap. OES defeated
Toledo 78-59 in Saturday’s early
game.
The Loggers were hitting on all
cylinders in Saturday’s late con-
test, as they built a 33-20 halftime
lead, then outscored Astoria 25-4
in a decisive fourth quarter.
Knappa’s Colton Weirup hit
eight of the Loggers’ 12 3-pointers,
on his way to a 28-point night. Dale
Takalo added 18 points and Kaleb
Miller scored nine for Knappa.
Ian Hunt and Josh Olson led
Astoria with 10 points apiece.
“We’re just struggling to score
right now,” said Astoria coach
Kevin Goin. “And we knew we
would. We’re young and it’s a
building year for us. We actually
played well through three quar-
ters, before we started subbing in
the fourth.”
But “I have to give it to Knappa
— they really played well,” Goin
said. “I don’t even know if Weirup
scored in the first quarter, then he
ends up with 28.”
Knappa returns to nonleague
action Tuesday at Clatskanie, while
Astoria plays Friday at R.A. Long.
Astoria’s home contest Thurs-
day against a Canadian team from
Semiahmoo has been canceled.

PREP SPORTS SCHEDULE
SEASIDE — Playing their first
game of the post-Maddi Utti era,
the Seaside girls basketball team
did not miss a beat Friday night
at the Gulls’ Nest, where the Lady
Gulls extended their unbeaten
streak to 16 games with a 48-25
win over Gladstone.
Undefeated at home last year,
Seaside has not lost a game on its
home court since Jan. 26, 2016.
And in their first contest with-
out Utti (now playing at Fresno
State) in four years, the Gulls
scored by committee.
Emy Kiser led Seaside with 12
points, followed by Annaka Gar-
hofer with nine. Bryre Babbitt
and Jetta Ideue chipped in eight
apiece. Anesha Smart added six,
as seven Gulls made the scoring
column.
“Well, if a positive vision can
become reality, this game was
about as close as I could imag-
ine,” said Seaside coach Mike
Hawes. “We played hard, kept the
turnovers in control, and ran and
gunned fairly well.”
The season-opening win was
a “good first outing, with contri-
butions from everyone,” he said.
“Great floor games by Jetta and
Bryre. Emy did solid, Annaka hit
some threes and Anesha played
her best varsity game.”
Defensively, the Gulls had nine
steals and held the Gladiators to
just 10 total points through three
quarters.
Seaside was hot from the
field, hitting 19-of-56 field goal
attempts, including 7-of-24 from
the 3-point line.
Babbitt added 10 rebounds,
four assists and four steals.
Seaside hosts Molalla on
Thursday.

the third quarter.
“It was a well-played game, back
and forth the whole way,” said War-
renton coach (and Junction City grad-
uate) Robert Hoepfl, whose team
improved to 2-0. “It was six points or
closer for most of the game.”
The Warriors finally began to pull
away, building a 10-point lead early
in the fourth quarter.
Kenzie Ramsey and Fernanda
Alvarez scored nine points apiece,
and Claire Bussert added eight as the
only other Warriors to score.
“Between Fernanda, Kenzie,
Sagi (Diego), Morgan (Blodgett)
