In addition to leading
the OSU initiative, Barth
is also a professor of
oceanography in the uni-
versity’s College of Earth,
Ocean, and Atmospheric
Sciences. He received a
Ph.D. in oceanography in
1987 from the Massachu-
setts Institute of Tech-
nology and Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution
Joint Program in Oceanog-
raphy. His research seeks
to understand the complex
spatial structure and time
variation of coastal ocean
circulation and water
properties, and how these
influence coastal marine
ecosystems.
Barth has led a num-
ber of research, technol-
ogy development and
ocean-observing projects
off Oregon and around the
world. He serves on the
Oregon Ocean Policy Ad-
visory Council’s Scientific
and Technical Advisory
Committee, contributing to
the design, implementation
and evaluation of marine
reserves along the Oregon
Coast.
