bookbinding, travel journals
SEAVIEW, WASH. — As part
of its fall/winter workshop
series, the Sou’wester Lodge
(3728 J Place, Seaview,
Washington) will host two
workshops the weekend of
Dec. 2 and 3.
“Coptic Stitch Bookbind-
ing” with Jillian Barthold
— an illustrator, printmaker
and bookbinder — will take
place noon to 4 p.m. Satur-
day, Dec. 2.
You’ll learn the basics of
bookbinding and the step-
by-step process of making a
handmade hardcover coptic
stitch book. Coptic stitch
binding is one of the earliest
forms of bookbinding and is
sewn with thread leaving an
exposed spine. You’ll leave
with your very own blank
book to use as a journal,
recipe book or sketchbook.
The cost is $30. All sup-
plies will be provided, but
students can bring special

Travel Journal.”
We will discuss the
history of the travel jour-
nal, illustration, narrative
and page-layout strategies.
Students will create a leath-
er-wrapped travel journal
with a pencil closure.
For students who want
to share their work, we will
discuss publication options
as well as using Adobe
InDesign and other online
publishing options.
The cost is $35. This
workshop is for students 15
and up (unless approved by
the instructors; 15 students
max. All skill levels are
welcome.
Bring a good pencil to be
included in the book itself.
The instructors recommend
to eat a hearty breakfast as
lunch will be postponed till
after class.
Hot tea and coffee will be
provided at both workshops.
