Port fi nally
activates
stormwater
treatment
Project cost more
than $2 million

After several fi ts and starts, and about 14
months behind schedule, the Port of Asto-
ria has activated a new stormwater treatment
system on Pier 3.
The system is required by the state Depart-
ment of Environmental Quality to limit cop-
per from entering the Columbia River and
harming salmon and other aquatic life.
Pumps

the
central
waterfront move water to a series of
settling ponds on the foot of Pier 3. Sus-
pended solids are settled out of the water in
the fi rst two ponds, after which it fl ows to
a vegetated area with plants meant to leach
out metals and other materials. The treated
water is then pumped through a pipe at the
end of Pier 3.

Volunteers at a community
Thanksgiving dinner in Seaside had
a lot on their plate Thursday after-
noon, but the meal had plenty of
helpers — and food — to go around.
More than 40 volunteers at the
Bob Chisholm Community Center
served an estimated 400 meals at the
dinner, Helping Hands Chief Execu-
tive Offi cer Alan Evans said.
“It’s amazing how many people
want to come together and have this
meal,” Evans said.
The annual dinner has grown
from its inception 15 years ago,
which was held at the Helping
Hands offi ce and included a small
handful of volunteers and two to
three cooked turkeys.
“We’d serve those and be done,”
said Cannon Beach Police Chief
Jason Schermerhorn, one of the
early volunteers. “It’s turned into a
great community event.”

CANNON BEACH — Three months
in, the Cannon Beach Academy is operat-
ing much like the other schools in the region.
Parent -teacher conferences are around the
corner, and the students are gearing up for
the winter holiday program.
But unlike most, many functions
of the charter school are done by volun-
teers. And the lack of volunteers is creating
stress for the academy’s four full-time staff
members, said Amy Moore, the acade-
my’s executive director , at a recent board
meeting.
In order to adequately serve the school’s
21 students, Moore needs at least one per-
son in the morning and one in the afternoon
for breakfast and lunch fi ve days a week.
But the number of volunteers and how much
time they can donate varies each week, often
leaving Moore running the breakfast service
on her own.

SEASIDE — A little rain
wasn’t about to keep anybody
away.
Applause and cheers
greeted runners and walkers
who braved the elements in
Seaside’s annual Turkey Trot,
a 5K run from Quatat Park to
the Prom, down to Avenue S,
east to Edgewood and back to
the park.
Formidable winds added to
the challenge for runners.
“I thought it would slow
them down, but I think it’s
even almost more fun because
it’s raining,” said Grace Smith
of the Sunset Empire Park and
Recreation District. “It’s a lit-
tle more excitement.”

Director Skyler Archibald

runners, his third year as a
participant.
