WORLD IN BRIEF
Associated Press
CBS News fires
Charlie Rose for alleged
sexual misconduct
NEW YORK — CBS News has fired Char-
lie Rose after several women accused the veteran
newsman of sexual misconduct.
Rose has been one of three hosts of “CBS This
Morning” since 2012 and is also a contributor
to “60 Minutes.” PBS and Bloomberg also sus-
pended airings of Rose’s nightly interview show
after the Washington Post published an article
Monday about women who said he groped them
and walked around naked in front of them.
CBS News President David Rhodes said
there is nothing more important than assuring a
safe, professional workplace. CBS had already
suspended him.
Rose’s co-hosts on the morning show, Gayle
King and Norah O’Donnell, were sharply criti-
cal of their colleague today. King said the allega-
tions did not fit the Rose she knew, but that “I’m
clearly on the side of the women who have been
very hurt and damaged by this.”
Mugabe resigns as
Zimbabwe’s president
after 37 years
HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe’s Pres-
ident Robert Mugabe resigned today, succumb-
ing to a week of overwhelming pressure from
the military that put him under house arrest, law-
makers from the ruling party and opposition who
started impeachment proceedings and a popula-
tion that surged into the streets to say 37 years in
power was enough.
The capital, Harare, erupted in jubilation after
news spread that the 93-year-old leader’s resig-
nation letter was read out by the speaker of parlia-
ment, whose members had gathered to impeach
Mugabe after he ignored escalating calls to quit
since a military takeover. Cars honked and peo-
ple danced and sang across the city in a spectacle
of free expression that would have been impossi-
ble during his rule.
Mugabe, who was the world’s oldest head
of state, said in his letter that legal procedures
should be followed to install a new president “no
later than tomorrow.”
Recently fired Vice President Emmerson
Mnangagwa would take over as the country’s
leader within 48 hours, said a ruling party offi-
cial, Lovemore Matuke. Mnangagwa, who fled
the country after his firing on Nov. 6, “is not far
from here,” Matuke said.
US readies new
sanctions against
North Korea, individuals
WASHINGTON — The Trump adminis-
tration readied new sanctions today on North
Korea, a day after declaring it a state sponsor of
terrorism in a move to put additional pressure on
Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
North Korea has joined Iran, Sudan and Syria
on America’s terror blacklist, a largely symbolic
step as the administration already has the author-
ity to impose virtually any sanctions it wants
on Kim Jong Un’s government over its nuclear
weapons development.
As part of its “maximum pressure” cam-
paign, President Donald Trump said the Trea-
sury Department would impose more sanctions
on North Korea and “related persons” start-
ing today, without hinting who or what would
be targeted. The move is part of rolling effort to
deprive Pyongyang of funds for its nuclear and
missile programs and leave it internationally
isolated.
“It will be the highest level of sanctions by
the time it’s finished over a two-week period,”
Trump said.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Mon-
day the pressure campaign was starting to bite
in Pyongyang, which is already facing unprece-
dented U.N.-mandated sanctions over its nuclear
and ballistic missile tests. Tillerson said anecdotal
evidence and intelligence suggests the North is
now suffering fuel shortages, with queues at gas
stations, and its revenues are down.
Almost 60,000 Haitians
allowed to stay in US
only until 2019
WASHINGTON — The Trump administra-
tion said it is ending a temporary residency per-
mit program that has allowed almost 60,000 cit-
izens from Haiti to live and work in the United
States since a powerful earthquake shook the
Caribbean nation in 2010.
The Homeland Security Department said
conditions in Haiti have improved significantly,
so the benefit will be extended one last time —
until July 2019 — to give Haitians time to pre-
pare to return home.
“Since the 2010 earthquake, the number of
displaced people in Haiti has decreased by 97
percent,” the department said in a statement
issued Monday evening. “Haiti is able to safely
receive traditional levels of returned citizens.”
Advocates and members of Congress from
both parties had asked the Trump administra-
tion for an 18-month extension of the program,
known as Temporary Protected Status. Hai-
tian President Jovenel Moise’s government also
requested the extension.
Nigeria police say
at least 50 killed in
mosque bombing
LAGOS, Nigeria — A teenage suicide
bomber detonated as worshippers gathered for
morning prayers at a mosque in northeastern
Nigeria, killing at least 50 people, police said
today, in one of the region’s deadliest attacks in
years.
Police spokesman Othman Abubakar told
The Associated Press they were “still trying to
ascertain the number of injured because they are
in various hospitals.”
While there was no immediate claim of
responsibility for the bombing in Mubi town in
Adamawa state, suspicion immediately fell on
the Boko Haram extremist group. The group is
based in neighboring Borno state and has been
blamed for scores of similar attacks over the
years.
Boko Haram increasingly has been using
teenagers or young women as bombers, many of
whom have been abducted.
The police spokesman said the young man
detonated his explosives while mingling among
the worshippers.
