Shootings in Northern
California kill 3,
wound kids at school
RED BLUFF, Calif. — Authorities say three
people have been killed in shootings today at
multiple locations in rural Northern California,
and the shooter has been killed by law enforce-
ment. Students also were shot and wounded at an
elementary school.
It’s not clear if the shooter is included among
the dead.
Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil John-
ston tells a TV station in the city of Chico that
officers are investigating at least five crime scenes
in and around the school in Rancho Tehama
Reserve, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.
Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with
the Corning Union Elementary School District,
says no one was killed at the school but a “num-
ber” of students were shot and wounded.
Florida police hunt
house by house for
killer after 4th slaying
TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa police blockaded a
neighborhood and searched with a SWAT team
and dogs for a possible serial killer today after
a fourth person was shot dead for no apparent
reason.
Residents of the Seminole Heights neighbor-
hood reported hearing shots just before 5 a.m.
Officers quickly moved in, and found the body of
Ronald Felton, 60, who had been walking across
the street when a gunman came up behind him
and fired, interim Police Chief Brian Dugan said.
“Our officers responded within seconds,”
Dugan said, enabling them to quickly set up a
perimeter around about a square mile area. SWAT
officers could be seen patrolling the streets with
rifles as they moved through yards.
“I believe that this person lives in this neigh-
borhood,” Dugan added as he spoke with report-
ers at the scene. “And we need everyone’s coop-
eration; we need everyone to pay attention to
what’s been going on.”
Dugan said that until his detectives can deter-
mine otherwise, Felton’s shooting will be treated
as if it’s related to last month’s 10-day spree
where three people were slain. The previous three
victims were alone and had gotten off a bus in the
neighborhood when they were gunned down at
night. None was robbed.
“This has got to stop,” Mayor Bob Buckhorn
told a news conference. “We will hunt this person
down until we find him.”
Trump Jr. messaged
with WikiLeaks during
2016 campaign
WASHINGTON — President Donald
Trump’s oldest son released a series of pri-
vate Twitter exchanges between himself and
WikiLeaks during and after the 2016 election,
including pleas from the website to publicize its
leaks.
Donald Trump Jr.’s release of the mes-
sages on Twitter came hours after The Atlantic
first reported them Monday. In the exchanges
— some of them around the time that the web-
site was releasing the stolen emails from Dem-
ocrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman
— WikiLeaks praises his father’s positive com-
ments about WikiLeaks and asks Trump Jr. to
release his father’s tax returns to the site.
The revelations are sure to increase calls in
Congress to have Trump Jr. testify publicly as part
of several committee probes into Russian inter-
ference in the 2016 election. And they add a new
element to the investigations that have been prob-
ing for months whether Trump’s campaign col-

luded in any way with the Russian government.
In an intelligence assessment released last Jan-
uary, the NSA, CIA and FBI concluded that Rus-
sian military intelligence provided hacked infor-
mation from the DNC and “senior Democratic
officials” to WikiLeaks. WikiLeaks has denied
that Russia was the source of emails it released,
including those from Clinton’s campaign chair-
man, John Podesta.
Sessions defends
himself to Congress,
says he never lied
WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff
Sessions, in a raised voice and defiant tone,
strongly defended himself today against alle-
gations that he had misled members of Con-
gress about his knowledge of communications
between Russians and associates of President
Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign.
“In all of my testimony, I can only do my
best to answer all of your questions as I under-
stand them and to the best of my memory,” Ses-
sions told the House Judiciary Committee. “But I
will not accept, and reject, accusations that I have
ever lied under oath. That is a lie.”
Sessions, who as an Alabama senator led a
foreign policy advisory council for the Trump
campaign, has been dogged since January by his
evolving explanations about his own foreign con-
tacts during the campaign and about how much
he knew of communication between Trump asso-
ciates and Russian government intermediaries.
Those questions have only deepened since the
guilty plea last month of George Papadopoulos,
a former Trump adviser who served on the coun-
cil Sessions chaired and who proposed arrang-
ing a meeting between Trump and Russian Presi-
dent Vladimir Putin. As well, another aide, Carter
Page, told Congress in private statements that he
had alerted Sessions about a meeting he planned
in Russia during the campaign.
Sessions said he had no recollection of the
conversation with Page.
Papadopoulos was arrested by the FBI and
pleaded guilty to lying to authorities about his
own foreign contacts during the campaign.
The oversight hearing came one day after the
Justice Department said Sessions had directed
federal prosecutors to look into whether a special
counsel might be merited to investigate allega-
tions that the Clinton Foundation benefited from
an Obama-era uranium transaction involving a
Russia-backed company.
Sessions says he
has ‘no reason to
doubt’ Moore accusers
WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff
Sessions voiced no skepticism today of accounts
by women accusing Roy Moore of groping or
pursuing romantic relationships with them when
they were teens, and hinted the Justice Depart-
ment might look into allegations against the
besieged Republican Alabama Senate candidate.
“I have no reason to doubt these young
women,” Sessions told a House committee.
His words seemed certain to carry heft in
Alabama, where he was a longtime GOP sena-
tor until becoming President Donald Trump’s
attorney general this year and remains one of that
state’s most influential Republican voices.
Answering questions before the House Judi-
ciary Committee, Sessions didn’t rule out a fed-
eral probe into the charges.
His remarks came as House Speaker Paul
Ryan joined the growing chorus of Washington
Republicans calling on Moore to drop out of the
race. Republicans fear damage from two poten-
tial outcomes should he remain a candidate:
Moore wins and GOP senators are tainted by
association with a colleague accused of molest-
ing teen-agers, or he loses the Dec. 12 election
to a Democrat.
“These allegations are credible,” Ryan,
R-Wis., told reporters today. “If he cares about
the values and people he claims to care about
then he should step aside.”
Moore is showing no sign of quitting, deny-
ing allegations by two women that he molested
them and sending out fundraising emails empha-
sizing his stance as a maverick battling establish-
ment politicians.
Iran to probe state-built
homes destroyed by
deadly quake
SARPOL-E-ZAHAB, Iran — Iranian Pres-
ident Hassan Rouhani launched an investiga-
tion today into why government housing built by
his hard-line predecessor collapsed while others
withstood a powerful earthquake near the border
with Iraq that killed more than 530 people.
In the Kurdish town of Sarpol-e-Zahab, which
was reconstructed in the decades since the 1980s
war with Iraq, the outer walls of apartment com-
plexes tumbled away in the magnitude 7.3 earth-
quake Sunday night. The housing was built as a
part of the “Mehr” or “kindness” project of for-
mer President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Aside from the 530 people killed in Iran, 7,817
were injured, the state-run IRNA news agency
reported. Health Minister Hassan Ghaziza-
deh Hashemi, who visited Kermanshah today,
warned that the death toll probably would rise.
Initial Iranian government estimates sug-
gest the quake destroyed 12,000 apartments
and free-standing homes, and damaged another
15,000.
Some immediately pointed to the Mehr homes.
About 2 million units were built in Iran, includ-
ing scores in Sarpol-e Zahab, as part of a populist
program by Ahmadinejad, who also offered cash
payouts and other incentives to appease the pub-
lic while Iran faced crippling economic sanctions
over its nuclear program.
Vicki Anne Palo
Vicki Anne Palo was born October 6, 1960 in Portland,
Oregon to John and Roberta McLean Palo. Vicki
spent the first ten years of her life in Portland, before
moving to Astoria, Oregon following her parents
purchase of Palo’s Department Store. Her sisters Lisa
and Kristen will fondly remember working at the
store with her, playing around while taking inventory
and counting Levi’s. She graduated from Astoria
High School in 1978 and continued working for the
family businesses, Butches for Sir in Astoria, Oregon
and The Outrigger in Long Beach, Washington.
After years of working for the family businesses, she
began the most cherished role of her life, becoming
a mother.
Most of all, Vicki lived her life for her family. She
was an encouraging, doting mother who loved
unconditionally. One could feel the sense of
fulfillment and pride Vicki had when surrounded by
her daughters. And most recently, she was overjoyed
with the anticipation of the upcoming February
birth of her first grandchild, Neymar Macareno. Together with her partner, Rip Puckett,
she enjoyed walking their dog Eli, going to Mariners games, going clam digging at the
beach, and spending time at the pool.
Vicki had a way of making everyone feel so loved and appreciated in such a genuine,
sincere way. She radiated love and positivity no matter the circumstance. Laughter
came easy to Vicki, her smile was contagious, she had a kind heart and a nice word
for anyone and everyone. She would never let a birthday go by without a phone
call and the full “Happy Birthday” song. She always had something personal and
sentimental to give you, because she kept everything. Just give her a couple of minutes
in the basement archives and she would always reemerge with whatever you needed;
heartfelt momentos that made you feel special, even if they were things you wished she
never kept!
What we will miss the most about Vicki are her hugs, the way she would drop everything
to make a memory, and her bright blue eyes with her smile that lit up a room. When
we think of Vicki, we will know that there is a piece of her heart and spirit with each and
every one of us, reminding us to show compassion, smile at a stranger and cherish your
loved ones.
Vicki was the daughter of the late John A. Palo, and is survived by her mother Roberta
Ryding; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marissa and Andy Hudkins of Long beach,
WA., Brittany McGinnis of Seattle, WA., Tayla and Jair Macareno of Astoria, OR., two sisters
and one brother-in-law, Lisa and Roy Allgeyer and Kristen Sherman, four nieces, Terra
Duey, Jenni Pinkstaff, Megan and Brooke Sherman; two great-nieces, Emme and Aila
Duey. Vicki also leaves behind her partner, Robert “Rip” Puckett, as well as the late Dale
McGinnis’s three daughters whom she loved as her own, Brandi Helligso of Astoria, OR.,
Misty Guest of Bend, OR., Cheri Cheatam of Lawrenceville, GA., and thirteen children
who fondly referred to her as Nana Vicki.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 18 at the Elks Lodge in
Astoria. Memorial contributions can be made to the local “Arm in Arm Fund” to help
cancer patients access support and follow-up treatment that would otherwise not be
accessible due to financial constraints. Examples of which include: self-image enhancing
accessories, e.g. wigs/bras; transportation to/from treatment.
