WORLD IN BRIEF
Associated Press
Army Sgt. Bergdahl pleading
guilty to desertion, misbehavior
FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl told a
military judge today that he’s pleading guilty to desertion and
misbehavior before the enemy.
“I understand that leaving was against the law,” said Berg-
dahl, whose decision to walk off his remote post in Afghanistan
in 2009 prompted intense search and recovery missions, during
which some of his comrades were seriously wounded.
“At the time, I had no intention of causing search and recov-
ery operations,” Bergdahl said, but he added that now he does
understand that his decision prompted efforts to find him.
Bergdahl, 31, is accused of endangering his comrades by
abandoning his post without authorization. He told a general after
his release from five years in enemy hands that he did it with the
intention of reaching other commanders and drawing attention to
what he saw as problems with his unit.
He may be hoping for leniency from the judge, Army Col. Jef-
fery R. Nance. The misbehavior charge carries a maximum pen-
alty of life in prison, while the desertion charge is punishable by
up to five years. The judge has ruled that a Navy SEAL who suf-
fered a career-ending leg wound and an Army National Guard
sergeant whose head wound put him in a wheelchair would
not have been hurt in firefights had they not been searching for
Bergdahl.
Bergdahl, who’s from Hailey, Idaho, has been assigned to
desk duty at a Texas Army base while his case unfolds.
White House: $4,000 more for
families with business tax cuts
WASHINGTON — By slashing corporate tax rates, the
Trump administration said today, the average U.S. household
will get an estimated $4,000 more a year.
This stunning 5 percent increase was met with skepticism
from tax experts and Democratic lawmakers who said the math
was flawed. Spread across every U.S. household, the White
House analysis claims it would generate “conservatively” an
income jump totaling $504 billion, or about $200 billion more
than the revenues currently generated by the corporate income
tax.
With this new report, the White House is making a populist
argument for its proposal to cut the 35 percent corporate tax rate
to 20 percent. Trump has pitched his tax plan as supporting the
middle class even though the details point to major companies
and the wealthy as the biggest winners. Polls suggest that voters
generally frown upon the idea of cutting taxes for businesses —
essentially rewarding these firms for avoiding taxes by exploiting
loopholes and keeping profits overseas.
The analysis by Kevin Hassett, chairman of the White House
Council of Economic Advisers, said that the considerably lower
rate would spur more investment by companies, which would
then boost hiring and worker productivity.
Separate studies, including a 2012 Treasury Department anal-
ysis, found that the vast majority of any savings would go to
investors, making it unlikely to push up wages as much as the
administration has argued. The administration removed the 2012
analysis from the Treasury Department’s website after releas-
ing its tax framework last month with Republican congressio-
nal leaders.
Outside economists said the income growth projected by Has-
sett appears to assume that workers appear to bear more than 100
percent of the burden of U.S. corporate taxes — a mathematical
impossibility.
Couple: ‘Once we saw this property, we immediately put our house on the market’
Continued from Page 1A
They toured the five-bed-
room hotel on a typical rainy
day in May, and were mysti-
fied by the area’s beauty.
“Once we saw this prop-
erty, we immediately put our
house on the market,” New-
man said. “This place is
special.”
Newman and Anderson
have been working to revamp
and modernize the space since
May. The original structure
was built in 1939 by Ernest
White, and the building has
since acted as a post office,
general store and hotel.
Until this year, Newman
and Anderson had no expe-
rience running an inn. But
what they do know is mar-
keting, and Newman said she
was excited to help solidify
the inn’s identity.
“There was already so
much working for us when
we took it over, so we are
just trying to create more of a
Pacific Northwest feel to it,”
Newman said. “We want to
keep it woodsy but modern.”
To do so, Newman and
Anderson are slowly chang-
ing out older furniture with
antiques from local stores.
Every room now has flow-
ers and candy from local ven-
dors, and they intend to make
more partnerships in the
future.
So far, the two love the
fact they get to meet so many
new people. Taking on the
challenge to make such an
established inn their own has
been rewarding.
But much of this experi-
ence has been learning on the
fly. Because the Inn at Arch
Cape is run by just the owners
and one housekeeper, Ander-
son said they have to be ready
to learn and do anything.
“One of the hardest things
is getting help to fix things
(on the North Coast),” Ander-
son said. “When the shower’s
running hot, or the TV’s not
working, you have to figure
out how to fix a lot of stuff
yourself.”
There are few new chal-
lenges they have learned to
overcome that weren’t issues
in Dallas. Since moving here,
Anderson learned how to
chop wood for fireplaces —
a skill not sought after in a
place where the temperature
trends closer to 100 degrees
most days.
Not having as many
resources closely accessible
has also been a change for the
couple.
“In Dallas, we had a Home
Depot 10 minutes away. Now
we have to plan our trips
into town so we don’t drive
to Warrenton all the time,”
Anderson said.
But when they look back
at those 60-hour work weeks
in Dallas and compare it with
the remote serenity of ocean
living, Newman said it is
worth the sacrifice.
“It’s strange to live in a
place where people vaca-
tion,” Newman said. “But this
is paradise. Every day we are
proud of ourselves for taking
the risk, and feel so lucky to
live here.”
