T
he new Knight
Cancer Collabo-
rative, a partnership
between Columbia
Memorial
Healthcare and
Oregon Health & Science
University, is expected to increase
its cancer treatment staff from 17
to 37 by the end of next year.
Leading cancer treatment at the
hospital is a team of doctors and a
medical physicist from OHSU’s
Knight Cancer Institute.
Overseeing cancer treatment
with chemotherapy and other
medications are Drs. Jennifer
Lycette and Amrita Desai.
Lycette, the medical director of
oncological services, has been
seeing patients in Astoria since
2013 at the Cancer Care Center, a
previous partnership between the
hospital and university. Originally
from Anchorage, Alaska, she
attended medical school at the
University of Washington, a
residency at Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center in Boston and a
fellowship at OHSU. She and her
husband have three children.
Desai was born in India, where
she attended medical school at Dr.
Vaishampayan Memorial
Government Medical College. She
earned a master’s degree in public
health from Harvard University in
Boston and completed, a residency
at Brown University in Rhode
Island and a fellowship at the
University of Miami. Her
professional interests are in cancer
epidemiology, blood cancer and
quality improvement.
Attracting her to the medical
oncology position was her desire
to interact with patients, Desai
said, adding that the North Coast,
where she has family, reminds her
of the countryside in India.
Overseeing radiation treatment
is Dr. Sahar Rosenbaum, director
of radiation oncology services.
Rosenbaum has been treating
cancer patients for more than 20
years. Originally from Israel, she
spent much of her childhood in
South Africa and started her career
in speech therapy and audiology,
before earning a master’s degree
in psychology and working as a
school therapist.
After moving to the U.S.,
Rosenbaum attended the Medical
College of Pennsylvania. Before
moving to the North Coast, she
was the medical director of
radiation oncology at Northside
Hospital in Atlanta. Rosenbaum
has three grown children and a
grandchild.
“We all like patient
interaction,” Rosenbaum said of
the new doctors during a recent
press tour. “That’s what binds us.”
Kyle Gallagher, a medical
physicist, is an expert in operation
of the linear accelerator that will
deliver radiation therapy in the
Knight Cancer Collaborative.
He will ensure the right dose of
radiation is delivered to the right
location prescribed by Rosenbaum.
Gallagher earned his doctorate
in medical physics through a joint
program between Oregon State
University and OHSU. He has
particular interest in advanced
radiation therapy techniques to
reduce the risk of late effects in
children.
