court fi ght over Riverwalk Inn

Param Hotel Corp., the
Portland-area company suing
the Port of Astoria over the
Astoria Riverwalk Inn, has
more than doubled its demand
in damages from the agency
as the two parties head to trial
next month.
Param had been courting
heavily indebted former Riv-
erwalk Inn operator Brad Smi-
thart since 2014. The company
fi led suit against the Port in
2015 after the agency canceled
Smithart’s lease and trans-
ferred operation of the hotel to
Astoria Hospitality Ventures,
whose owner is the brother-in-
law of former Port Commis-
sioner Stephen Fulton.
A weeklong trial is sched-
uled for early next month.
Param claims the Port
breached a prior contract and
favored a locally connected
company. The hotelier has
sought to take over the lease
of the Riverwalk Inn or dam-
ages equivalent to the value of
what the company could have
made with Smithart’s remain-
ing lease.
In an amended complaint
fi led last week, attorney Colin
Hunter increased the esti-
mated value of Param’s lost
profi ts from $1.5 million to
$4 million, in addition to the
$500,000 he estimates in dam-
ages to Param’s reputation.
Clatsop County Circuit
Court Judge Dawn McIn-
tosh has denied attempts by the
Port and Param to win judg-
ment before trial. A separate
lawsuit by the Port against Smi-
thart is on hold until the legal
battle with Param is resolved.
Makerspace acquires Van Dusen Building

has acquired the Van Dusen
Building at the corner of
Duane and 10th streets.
The Harbor, a regional
advocate for victims of
domestic and sexual vio-
lence, had put the building up
for sale last year after trying
to develop it into the group’s
new headquarters. Pig ’N
Pancake founders Marianne
and Robert Poole donated
the building to The Harbor,
which used to be located
there but moved to the Nor-
blad Building.
Astoria Makers was
started last year inside a
warehouse in Miles Cross-
ing, where the group has
been sharing space with Steel
& Timber Construction/
Fabrication.
“We’re excited to incorpo-
rate many of our own designs
into the new space, including
furniture, shelving, signage
and creative space design,”
Glen Herman, owner and
founder of Astoria Makers,
said in a release. “The main
level and basement will fea-
ture a full-scale workshop
with tools and classes in
trades such as woodworking,
welding, silversmithing, jew-
elry-making, screen printing,
sewing, ceramics and digi-
tal design. A retail gallery for
members will also be on the
main level.”
The upstairs will be
developed into rentable art-
ist studios with access to the
workshop, along with a com-
munity kitchen and meeting
area. Astoria Makers hopes
to open the building to the
public later this year or early
2018.
“Once open to the public,
we’ll be accessible to every-
one and can really live out
the vision of the whole busi-
ness,” Lucy Barna, a local
artist and member of the
group’s startup team, said
in the release. “I’m excited
to show people of all ages
and backgrounds how many
ways there are to create and
how much better it is to do
it with others. We hope to
become a true creative hub in
Astoria.”
Astoria Makers has been
waiting to grow its member-
ship and education offerings
until the move. The busi-
ness has focused on design
and fabrication, creating new
platform beds for the Can-
nery Pier Hotel & Spa, local
signage, laser engraving for
Fort George Brewery and tea
box displays for Astoria Cof-
fee Co. & Corner Deli.
