with home improvement
fraud in Connecticut
Extradited
over the
weekend

STAMFORD, Conn. —
An Astoria man was extra-
dited from Oregon over the
weekend for allegedly col-
lecting deposits from three
Stamford residents in 2013
and fleeing without perform-
ing any work.
John Mech, 56, was
charged with three counts
each of third-degree larceny,
conspiracy to commit lar-
ceny and impersonating a
licensed home contractor. At
his arraignment at the Stam-
ford courthouse Monday
afternoon, Judge Richard
Comerford ordered that he
be held in lieu of a $50,000
court appearance bond.
While arrest warrants for
Mech have been pending
since 2014, a recent brush
with the law
in Oregon
for a salmon
fishing viola-
tion revealed
Mech was
wanted in

cut and he
was held by
authorities until he could
be extradited. Mech has no
criminal record.
Supervisory
Assistant
State’s Attorney Steven
Weiss said Mech also has
pending arrest warrants in
Monroe, Westport and Trum-
bull for similar activity.
Weiss said the high bond
was needed because Mech’s
“exposure was somewhat
serious.”

said the ripoffs to the Stam-
ford homeowners occurred
in March, April and Septem-
ber of 2013. During each of
those incidents Mech took
over $2,000 from each home-
owner, Scanlan said.

A man was sentenced to
more than six years in prison
Monday after pleading to
guilty to sex crimes against
three teenage girls in Clatsop
County.
Tyler Dean Campbell, 25,
will serve 80 months in prison
after pleading no contest in
July to first-degree online
sexual corruption of a child,
tampering with a witness, fur-
nishing to a person under 21
and two counts of attempt to
commit a Class A felony. He
originally faced rape, sod-

arrested Sunday morning.
Astoria Police responded
to a report of the incident just
after 7 a.m. at Coldwater Surf
and Skate, located at 80 11th
Street. A sliding glass win-
dow had been smashed and a
large rock was found inside.
Police later located Jon-
athan Leroy Thompson, 18,
listed by authorities as a tran-
sient, near 16th Street and
Commercial Street just after
10 a.m. Thompson allegedly
then chucked a longboard,
valued at roughly $200, into

and more furnishing charges
before reaching a plea deal
with the Clatsop County Dis-
trict Attorney’s Office.
Campbell had been found
guilty of a sex offense in
Washington state and pleaded
guilty in 2016 to failing to
register as a sex offender.
He also was convicted of
fourth-degree assault in Clat-
sop County. An indictment
in Clackamas County also
charges him with two counts
of assault and one count of
strangulation following a
reckless driving incident in
2016.
Campbell does not have a
residence in Clatsop County
and had been sleeping in
acquaintances’ homes. Two
of the victims said they were
under the influence of intoxi-
cants during the alleged acts
while another was a minor
whom he had attempted to
lure online into sexual acts.
One of the victims who
was intoxicated said Camp-
bell forced her to drink. He
also threatened two of them
in an attempt to prevent them
from disclosing the crimes.
Campbell and Mary Ann
Murk, his court-appointed attor-
ney, both said his alcohol abuse
was a major factor in the cases.
“He has very low inhibi-
tions,” Murk said. “He oper-
ates at a level of maturity that
is much lower than his actual
age.”
But Circuit Court Judge
Paula Brownhill was not buy-
ing what she called an excuse
for the crimes.
“I think you’re a sexual
predator,” Brownhill said. “If
I could lock you up for more
than 80 months, I would do
so.”

glass and featured a message
written in white spray paint:
“Do your worst! Open during
storm! Bullies suck.”
