Scott Thompson of Blackberry Bog Farm near Svensen gets ready to feed one of the operation’s cows. The farm, which caters primarily to farmers markets in the region, offers fresh
cut flowers, vegetables, chickens, turkeys and ducks. “This has been a lifelong dream of mine since college,” he said.
ON THE JOB

T
o celebrate Labor Day, we have chosen to focus
on some of the people who help our communi-
ties function and fl ourish.
They repair our bridges that span the Columbia River
and Youngs Bay, and fi x our boats at West Coast Propel-
ler Service in Warrenton. They are young cadets in Can-
non Beach who sometime log 20 miles a day on bicycles
to provide vital information to visitors.
They volunteer to protect our environment and natu-
ral resources on the beaches in front of Haystack Rock.
They grow our food and make our homes beautiful with
freshly cut fl owers in places like Blackberry Bog Farm
near Svensen.
They help our pets when the animals are sick. They fi x
whatever needs fi xing at Repair Cafe events in Astoria.
They build homes and work at restaurants, often unno-
ticed by the public.
And they keep us safe working for the U.S. Coast
Guard by land, sea and air.
On Labor Day, we recognize the people who, on a
daily basis, make life better for us — who make life on
the North Coast work.
