He roams the fairgrounds from noon to 6 p.m. before hosting the sec- ond annual OSU Alumni and Extension volunteer appreci- ation celebration from 7 to 10 p.m. The public is invited to join the celebration, which includes pictures with Benny the Beaver, prizes, live music and games. Cannon Beach workshop focuses on cheesemaking The Daily Astorian CANNON BEACH — A one-day workshop, “Intro- duction to Cheese and Chee- semaking,” with Marc Bates, aka “Cheeseguy of the North Coast,” is being held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Cannon Beach Cham- ber Community Hall, 207 N. Spruce St. The workshop includes a cheese tasting of the seven major cheese families and a hands-on session where par- ticipants work in pairs to convert milk to queso fresco. Other sessions focus on the history and categorization of cheese and learning about the key steps of the cheese mak- ing process. A second tasting rounds out the day. Bates has 50 years expe- rience in the cheese indus- try. During this time, he has managed the Washington and Oregon State university creameries, taught numerous cheesemaking classes and judged the cheese champi- onship competitions.
